Sale sign goes up on the estimated milliondollar club The Country Club will be of fered for sale Oct if no fur ther financial assistance is received during the 10 day period The announcement was made by Paul Coffey vicepresident of the Country Club at news conference Monday The clubs board of directors has passed motion inviting any member shareholders or group of member shareholders to initiate move which would keep the club alive If the board does not receive proposal during the 10 days the club will be offered for sale publicly or by tender with any offer subject to the approval of the shareholders Mr Coffey said the board of directors does not want to see the Country Club sold We feel that in this club we have one of the finest golf courses in Ontario and it would be shame to see it ever go out of existence as golf club he said The board has been trying since the start of the year to steady the rocky financial pic ture of the club Since Jan weve been try ing every way possible to finan cially put the club back on its feet including looking into life time memberships two or three runs at the capital funds project and we kept extending it because we felt we could be facilities but to assemble the land and build golf course would probably be far beyond what any investor would like to invest Mr Coffey stated that he thought Barrie would suffer very very definitely without country club really dont think they realize what they stand to lose he said Mr Coffey stressed that the club had commitment to its members up until the end of the season He said the club had Staff Reporter City council jumped the gun Monday an nouncing the sale of 25 acres of cityowned in dustrial land Council held ecial meeting Monday to approve the sale land on Bayview Drive to Tandy Electronics Ltd Radio Shack Divi sion But company representatives told The Bar rie Examiner this morning the sale has not been approved by Tandy officials administrative assistant Radio Shack Barrie said no decision was made but there is very strong possibility Bob Nicholson thc company will buy the land Mr Nicholson said Iandy is proposing an officewarehouse building on thc sitc north of Big Bay Point Road on the east side of Iiayvicw Drivc Council approved the sale for $393750 which includes the land cost of $14000 an acre $1000 an acre for administrative costs and $18750 for real estate agent Last week the city bought the 25 acres as well as another 50 acres of land from the Canadian General Electric CGE company for $1050000 or $14000 an acre Ald Alex Arthur finance committee chair man said the city is paying real estate agent George Worrall Realty Ltd because of council policy the area Ald Arthur said council decided to pay the fee if an agent helped attract an industry to He said the selling price of $14000 an acre is low because the land is not serviced The city was selling serviced industrial land for about $20000 an acre The remaining 50 acres of land will have higher taining By JOHN WROE Examiner Staff Reporter The Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce will back the 1977 Winter arnival providing the affair is selfsustaining and is held in thcdowntown area The Chamber board of direc tors made motion to approve an executive committee recom mendation to that effect at breakfast meeting at the Con tinental Inn this morning Don Coulson who was secretary of the Winter Car nival Committee last year said the Carnival was working with $10000 deficit Chamber president Ed Harper said that unless the Carnival could pay for itself and hopefully make profit the Chamber should not sponsor it The winter carnival commit tee will begin meeting soon and Mr Harper said that when the committee draws up budget the budget could come before the board of directors for approval But Ed Tschirhart committee chairman for this year said he would like some guidelines In reply Mr Coulson said the main problem last year was depending too much on gate receipts He said the committee followed its budget closely but had expected $22000 from the gate Instead it only got $14000 when rain washed out the se cond day of the carnvial Mr Coulson also criticized the city for its lack of support of the carnival He said the car nival does lot for the city so the city should give some sup port toit Barrie alderman Ross Archer explained that often city coun cil members were in favor of project but felt constrained by the need to keep taxes to minimum But Mr Archer agreed that relocatin the car nival to the centre the city was good idea Mr Harper sug ested closing off some streets or use in the carnival and Mr Archer said there might be some problems there However Mr Tschirhart said he was very much in favor of closing some streets When the Winter Carnival committee has rough plan
