agers adults and senior citizens But few have any programs for the mentally or physically handicapped Barrie will soon be one of the few The city is making use of $10000 grant from the ministry of community and social ser vices for the development of special recreation programs Lesley Gordon 25 is the first step in the development Mrs Gordon was hired by the city recreation department as the project coordinator for the specialized recreation services Basically her job is to prepare program for the men tally and physically handicap pedin the city She comes to the city with im pressive qualifications in cluding bachelor of artsin recreation from the Universxty of Waterloo and an interdis ciplinary masters degree in theraputic recreation lphysical education and specia educa tion from the University of Oregon There is no real other recreation program in the ci ty she said This should become part of every munic ipalitys recreation program Mrs Gordon is preparing program for the mentally re tarded in the city working with various existing organizations including the Adult Rehabilitia tion Centre The program should be star ting within the next two mon ths she said adding it depends on the response from the public NEEDS MORE PEOPLE ill try to develop volunteer core for the pro gram she said If the pro gram is going to succeed it for the have to help with integration of the handica ped into society difference between regu recreational programs and special recreational programs There are alternative motives league in the city We must develop the league at the local level she said According to the guidelines grant the programs Mrs Go on said integration is not the sole aim of the project which will also offer the han dicapped something to do while teac and living flying farmers expected on weekend As many as 300 flying farmers are expected in Barrie this weekend What you may ask are fly ing farmers The answer is simple they are farmers with airplanes who belong to the Ontario Flying Farmers OFFi The OFF is holding its 14th annual convention at the Con tintental inn in Barrie this weekend and farmers from across Ontario and few from other parts of North America are expected to arrive Friday night and Saturday morning Since they are flying in says Barb Wilcox of Bradford one of the organizers the attendance depends heavily on the wea ther But so far she said Hank Elliott course instruc tor is elated that more girls are taking courses such as survey Theres no reason why they shouldnt The other girls have been excellent students Says Maureen something She chose survey out of pure in terest in the work Maureen says survey is for anybody who wants it male or female Id suggest it to other girls When was in school wanted to take engineering but never followed it up wasnt en couraged The problem with many girls is they have negative at titude in the beginning about certain jobs says Maureen They dont think they can do it Iknow can
