NEW IN CABINET This is 1974 file photo of Tony Abott who was ap pointed minister of consumer and corporate affairs by Prime Minister Trudeau in Ottawa Tuesday night Photo Day in the life of ancient man LAGOA SANTA Brazil Reu ter He had longish head and was probably short As he gazed out from his cave at the edge of the clear waters of this lake he may well have seen giant sloths more than 16 feet tall bending down trees to eat their leaves In meadows nearby the original American horse may have grazed and the last descendants of the sabre toothed tiger may still have lurked in the bush Moving cautiously out into the dawn he would hunt for food for his familyfrogs fish possibly deerusing stone weapons to catch his prey As the chill evening winds ruffled the lakes calm surface he would laboriously rub sticks together to make fire Such was day more than 12000 years ago in the life of Lagoa Santa Man whose bones are the oldest so far found in South America The Lagoa Santa region of eastern Brazil with its many caves and rock paintings is treasure trove of prehistoric finds FOUND BY DANE The first human skull was found here over 130 years ago among animal bones from the Pleistocene age by Danish ar cheologist Peter Lund He estimated the age of the skull at 10000 years based on the animals among which it was found But many subsequent experts disputed his findings arguing that because of the nature of the ground the skull could have been carried by water to layer of lsediment much older than it se It might be only 1000 years old or even less they said But this year group of arch eologists led by Frenchwoman Annette LamingEmperaire have produced what they say is scientific proof vindicating Lund and confirming the pres ence of man in Lagoa Santa more than 12000 years ago Excavating the Lapa Ver melha cave the archeologists who have been working in the area since 1971 found human skull at depth of about 40 feet Carbons found in the undis turbed sediments yard above the skull were dated at between 10000 and 11600 years old Prof LamingEmperaire said the skull must be at least 12000 years old making it the oldest human skull found in South America Several parallel studies are under way to determine the ar cheolo ical ecology of the re gion physical type of man and the animals and plants he encountered The bones of several extinct giant animals have been unear thed and particles of pollen found in the sediment will help determine the nature of plant life and the climate Traces of fires dating from several ages have been found in Lapa Vermelha Unfortunately some of the caves have been defaced by sightseers breaking off stalac tites and stalagmites or writing the names of favorite soccer teams over ancient cave paint ings some of them dated at over 4000 years old Among lower paid at $663 an hour VANCOUVER CP Garry Edwards is one of four mem bers of Vancouvers graveyard Cushman cart brigademen who rake up litter from down town
