17th century voyage of the French explorer Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle La Salle left what is now Montreal in 1681 and travelled up the St Lawrence and through the Great Lakes before gomg down the Mississippi to New Orleans Members of La Salle Ex pedition II an American bicentennial project also en dorsed by the Canadian and French governments left Mon treal in August and plan to hit New after calling ruling by Judge Don Inch capricious Wednesday Reiter is representing Robert Rowbotham in preliminary hearing into three charges of drug trafficking He had been crossexamining Constable Bruce Calnen of the RCMP at thetime Calnen had revealed that person at party Rowbotham held at his Beeton farm was later source of information But he said he could not reveal the name of the informer because it was confidential He said all the informer did was confirm the identities of people at the party Reiter began asking which people the informer had iden tified but Calnen after several glances at federal prosecutor John Burgar replied know what youre up to Theres method in his madness Hes trying to trap me into revealing who the person was Judge Inch directed Reiter to discontinue his line of question ing and said he would give the witness the courts protection Reiter called the ruling capricious and said he would not discontinue his line of ques tioning Your remarks are contemp tuous said Judge Inch Ill adjourn court for five minutes and you can make an apology he said if he did not receive an apology he would take the 3p propriate steps When court resumed Reiter did RICHARD DUNSTAN Examiner Staff Reporter The Downtown Improvement Board has joined the drive for an official plan amendment to promote renewal of Barries downtown core Board chairman Doug Cherry will appear before tonights public meeting on the future of the downtown area to support an amendment proposed by the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce The meeting called by sub committee ofcity planning board will be held in the coun cil chamber at city hall beginn ingat730pm The proposed amendment endorsed Wednesday by the Downtown Improvement Board would designate the core area as the heart of the city and as Barries primary retail cultural recreational and administrative district The amendment also calls for the drafting of secondary land use plan for the downtown core following variety of studies of the areas needs and ssi bilities One possibility to in vestigated would be major downtown seeder develop ment which could be shopp ing centre recreational com plex or an administrative cen tre In statement endorsing the proposal the Downtown Im provement Board supports the Chambers longstanding con tention that an amendment is necessary before the city can participate in the newly announced provincial down town revitalization program CITE STATEM ENTS Both the board and the chamber cite statements by John Rhodes provincial hous ing minister that in order to take part in the program municipality must Wm ya DOUG CHERRY to attend meeting make strong commit ment to its downtown core develop Ian in concert with its of icial plan to follow through on the com mitment and identify the seeder pro jects for which provincial funding is needed The provincial program pro vides for partiallyrecoverable loans of up to twothirds the cost of downtown renovations including land assembly and clearing acquisition and renovation of an existing key anchor building installation of an open or covered downtown mall and servicing The Downtown Improvement Board statement also notes that the board retained consultants in 1974 to work out longterm development plan for the down town area but abandoned the project after consultants said it would be waste of money until city parking and transportation policies and Oning bylaws were updated Tonights meeting is open to presentations by all Barrie residents businesses and organizations Discussion will not be limited to the chamber proposal but chamber officials ho to read the amendment at beginn ing of the meeting to get public reaction PRESENTATION The meeting will also feature presentation byGeorge Przybylowski of the provincial housing ministry on the provi sions of the downtown revit alization program The meeting will be televised on Cable The planning board subcom mittee will study public sub missions to the meeting and report its findings to planning board probably at its Sept 28 meeting The subcommittee report is expected to include recommendation for or against the proposed amendment The amendment must
