Some still plan to grow By VINCENT EGAN Business and Consumer Affairs Analyst Thomson News Service Its becoming clear that business is no more united in opposition to the antiinflation program than is the country at large Certame there are many cor porate executives who as re ported here in recent days believe that it wouldnt be pru dent to commit their companies to spend large sums of capital to FOOTING In other companies or other industries such gungho expan sion may be impossible company that depends on equity financing rather than internally generated capital wouldnt stand much of chance of raising the required capital as long as dividends are restrained by the antiinflation program By LEONARD NOBLE My friend Schlcpper who as you know from already reading this column is rather self opinionated and dogmatic in dividual does not think much of the Rhodes and Maloney showdown Im afraid cant get very excited he said about whether the Ontario govern ment was right or wron in only making yment half million dol ars for farm in stead of $750000 You wouldnt say that retortod if it was your farm Naw he replied Youve Est to realize the principle hind the whole business ts not could ask so in consideration of friend Schlepper asked it hat is the point The point is he replied acknowledging the fact that had asked the right question nodding his head in approva at the same time as he carried on the discussion is the fact that Maloney has been waiting for an issue to come up in order to tr his muscles as ombudsman ll Ive got to say is that he should have remained defence counsel How can you say that queried After all Maloney has taken on the job of defen dln the underdog of the provin ce mith of the underdog in English and History Barrie was soon to learn that he was an ac complished musician equally ac cept in teaching language of Music Seven pupils turned out for the first priactice when it was announced that an or chestra would be organized at BCI modest beginning for the great concert band which has become internationally famous Soon after the original seven grew to 40piece symphony orchestra which in 1939 and 1940 thrilled Bar rie audiences with great music The martial influence of the war led to the organizing of band the place of the strings being taken by fuller woodwind section the universal present Still the likelihood that infla tion will be dampened and that the economy will return to solid footing as result does provide business with strong incentive to maintain or upgrade its capital expansion wherever circumstances per mit It takes anywhere from two to four years to get new fac tories built and up to full employment said Standley Hoch financial vicepresident of Canadian General Electric Co Ltd The question of lead times of incentives to business to act to help avoid another bout of in flation is critically impor tant he told recent gather ing of business people CAVEAT EMPTOR Rhodes Maloney the courtroom Now youre cooking With gas kid Schlepper rejoined Dont you see Maloney has fallen into the tra of trying to be the lifesaving efence coun sel in mixing it with Rhodes The only problem that Maloney has is that his underdog isnt much of an underdog as far as the majority of the dpeople in Ontario are concerne In the first place no one other than the Liberal govern ment in Ottawa wanted an air port in Pickering Second the Ontario Government pro ably aid through the nose to assem Ie the land since there was no big secret about the land assembly anyway So now we have Maloney getting up on his hind legs and emanding that the Ontario government pay more money or the land Personally the whole argument puts me to slee matter of fact con tinued Schle per Maloney has blown it es probably set the position of ombudsman back 100 years by getting into an argument that nobodys in terested in Of far more reaching significance is the fact that there are dozen or more problems that affect lot more people in Ontario that he might have considered Give me one for example asked An example replied Schclp is an investigation into the Ontario govern ment used the taxpayers hard eamed cash to buy the great leader remained to the end the permanent revolu tionary For him the egalitarianism within Chinese Communism which the long struggles of the 303 aroused was to be preserved in the permanent revolution after victory in Oc tober1949 This was relatively easy to sustain after that victory as the new Peoples Republic of China went into the Herculean task of reconstruction after nmrly half century of continuous war Mao as poet and scholar ex horting one of every four human bein on earth to build new an totally different society in China functioned as he had done in the previous decade He was still the leader in adversity the titan of man who would give direction and purpose to the hundreds of millions But as China emerged from the long chaos of empire and the Chiang Kaishek eras she also took on the initial trap pings of modern industrial state The first efforts at this were both picturesque and unsuc cessful the srrcalled Great Leap Forward of thelate 50s LNLSLALSIGHTS You world history It was Sept 13 1759 that Gen James Wolfe won the battle of the Plains of Abraham and changed the course of world development The end of the French regime in North America was only question of time It is true that Gen Levis nearly recaptured Quebec the following spring and that France might have regained Canada at the peace conference that ended the war in 1763 But France had had enough of Canada tiy this time Voltaire is on record as saying that France had only lost acres of snow So no real effort was made to regain North American ter WE WANT YOUR OPINION Letters
