A1 McLean still isnt con Vinced He hasnt changed his mind and is against the proposed local airport in Oro Township Mr McLean an Oro Town ship councillor says hes ooncemed about number of aspects of an airport in cluding noise access and in creased traffic There are still lot of questions to be answered he said havent changed my mind andI feel reflect lot of ratepayers feelings Mr McLean was one of 17 people who flew from Barrie to Toronto Island Airport Friday in demonstration of short take off and landing STOL Twin Otter plane The demonstration was arranged by the Barrie Air port committee and spon sored by de Havilland Air craft of Canada Ltd Three representatives of de Havilland went on the trip with Mr McLean two mem bers of the Oro planning board Clarence Smith chairman and John Vokes Barrie Aldermen Del Cole Ross Archer Nelson Garrett and Janice Laking three members of the airport com mittee Don McNall chair man Graydon Richardson and Ross Cowan Peter Lee of the city en ineering depar tment an Ed Harper president of the Greater Barrie Chamber of Com merce The demonstration in cluded taking off from the present Barrie airfield near Anne Street in Vespra Town ship flying to Toronto Island airport and return OVER SITE On the return flight the pilot flew over Collingwood Airport which has features the Barrie committee is hoping to have in Cm and over the prgï¬osed airport site inthetown ip One of the main issues in the rezoning needed for an airport is whether the 212 acres can be used as far mland The airport committee inted out the number of arge stone piles on the progeny and has said the is unsuitable for far ming Mr McLean farmer who lives few miles from the site said his farm was covered in rocks but be cleared them and has workable farmland He said he wants to know why either the existing Barrie airport location in Vespra cannot be extended or the city does not try to arrange the use of the Canadian Forces Base Bor den airport The Borden airport has two paved runways and the necessary buildings and hangars NOWAY Mr McNall airport com mittee chairman said it is almost impossible to either expand the present location or use CFB Borden He said the present site is hampered by two power lines at each end of the airfield Also he said the Georgian Mall water reservoir tank in terferes with approaches to the landing field not per mitting the use of either night or instrument flying Any work at the present airfield would not help the situation and would only be temporary hesaid The runway is not paved andis about1100feetlong The airport committee would like to have paved runway about 8500 feet long to permit not only STOL planes but smaller single and twin engine airplanes which need more than 1000 feet to land andtakeoff Mr McNall federal Department of National Defence DND sent letter to the committee recently saying the Borden airfield uld not be used He sai the reasons are that the base used for training regular and militia forces and there is mortar firing range within the flight pattern The firing ran is con sidered protecte airspace and would eliminate the use of instrument flying said the AFTER MEETING Mr Smith of the Oro plan ning board said he could not make decision on the re zoning until after the public meeting He said he believes an air port is needed in the Barrie area but does not know if the Oro site is the right place forit The site he said is similar to the Collingwood airport in that it is not built up and only few houses are in the general area The demonstration did give better idea of the site and proposal he said Mr Smith said the Oro board has not discussed the rezoning application in great length but has heard the committees presen tation After the public meeting at the end of the month the board will make decision and another public meeting will be held he said Then the decision will be forwarded to township coun cil and possibly to the On tario Municipal Board where objectors can ask for public hearing Barrie Alderman Ross Ar cher declared candidate in the mayoralty race this elec tion said he could not make decision on the airport until allthe costs are available Ald Archer said he has to be assured that the cost to the individual taxpayer will not be too heavy He said he would not like to see the senior citizens in Barrie living on fixed wages saddled with in creased costs because of an airport they will not be using recognize that any facilities will cost money he said But have to be assured that they will be within reason The first hurdle he said is to have proper zoning of the land approved by Oro town ship council Ald Archer said he basically supports the philosophy of having local munici al airport which can be use by individuals and by corporations within the area DEAN JAMESON YURIE AND NATALIA STYBELL EXAMINE TIIE WIDE VARIETY OF PRIZES OFFERED T0 EXAMINER CARRIERS IN THE HOME READING CLU ALDERMEN DEL COLE AND
