The total cost has jumped to $32397 from the original estimate of $15000 made by thc Senior hockey club in the spring Flyers had proposed to pay for the renovations at no cost to the city The club did ask forfa reduction in the arena rental dates Flyers wanted to pay $300 per game rather than the $350 for regular season games and $575 for playoff games Flyers also wanted free use of the room for three This is something were camp opens Among the veterans return ing to the Flyers this season are Bob Baird the leagues scoring champion Gary Lyte Paul Regan and Phil Branston The line of Branston Baird and Regan contributed potent scoring attack which helped send the Flyers to Spokane Wash and the Allan Cup finals last season At the time of this writing the Flyers had still to sign coach although the announcement of Darryl Slys return to the helm may be just days away Flyers and the Senior league underwent considerable changes since last season Two lacking and something we need said Steve Cripps Fly ers general manager He said the renovations would benefit each and every group which uses the arena City council decided not to reduce the rental rates but was willing to pay onethird the cost of renovations The original estimate of $15000 was revised to $24000 with the city Flyers and Win tario paying $8000 each Later this summer three tenders for the work were well over the $14000 figure with Bentorswell Construction of Barrie the lowest bidder at $33787 minus $1300 for pain ting City council agreed to in crease its share of the cost to $11879 from $8000 Saturday new teams have been added The Mississauga Golden Ar rows and the Brantford Alex anders The league chopped 12 games off last seasons 44 game schedule and brought the Thunder Bay Twins into full participation Last season the Twins played an abbreviated schedule due to the high costs of bringing in teams to play League also created two disi vions with the Flyers Cam bridge and Thunder Bay in one and Orillia Mississauga Whit by Brantford and Lindsay in another LEGION MINOR HOCKEY REGISTRATI Wed Sept 8th pm9 pm Sat Sept 11th am12 noon Wed Sept 15th pm9 pm Sat Sept 18th am12 noon Legion Hall $4000 short of mak ing the thing go Cripps stressed that the com pleted facilities would not be for sole use by the Flyers as some may fear He said that when the Flyers first released the plans there was mis interpretation which hinted that the Flyers would have ex clusive use of the room By exclusive we meant that when we have game the room is ours for the night Id hate to see this thing go down the drain its something we could all use Cripps said Ernie Miller director of operations and advisory for the Flyers said there were two openings available to keep the project alive We either get assistance from the groups or else the pro ject be cut to bring it back to budget The Barrie Arena underwent major facelift last season but Mr Alexander feels that the ad dition of such room would at tract more people into the arena He also suggested that such room as called for in the re novations could be put to use during the summer months Mr Cripps said the team has been fighting for facility in side the arena to operate booster club following home games of the Flyers Flyers wanted the support of the other major users of the arena before meeting with the public works department Eugene Walden president of the Barrie Minor Hockey As sociation gave his support morally saying it was some thing which should be seriously looked at Harry Partridge vice president of the Barrie Colts Junior
