ryafvtp¢¢zao fSPORTS WHEEL IulgAo4 yuu decided that would not ride the second leg AQThe Barrie Examinez Friday September I976 Tour was work but it was great By ED HARPER Chay Last week in this column wrote about bicycle tour that was invited to ride in from Orangeville to Barrie and return Well this two day tour started last Saturda in Orangeville with the weather just perfect for bicycle ri ing There were 18 cyclists about half were women and the course was very good with very little traffic As said last week had not been riding my cicycle more than three or four times all year and was in very poor condition for tour such as this We started out from Orangeville with the tour leader Les Humphries and myself in the lead We set very fast pace and had covered 11 miles in the tst half hour My old legs were holding up good until we came to hill It was the longest and steepest hill that had ridden on in many years About two thirds of the way up my le felt as though they were dead and they just would not ttirn tie pedals So got off the bike and stood there as everyone else went by me and right tip to the top of the hill Feeling very eintvtrrassul got on my bike and rode the rest of the way up When got to the top everyone had sto ped for rest kept on going and that was the last saw it the riders until that evening at the Rrookdale for supper Being an exbicycle racer onLv know one way to ride bike go as hard as can until run out of steam covered the first 30 jailes in about one and half bouts bitt at the 35 mile mark my legs began to cramp up and they kept gett ing worse until at the 142 mile mark had to call it day had passed through the village of Thornton and was getting flostt to Barrie but the old legs refule to work anymore Unless you have experienced the feeling of leg cramps caused jxjirough exertion you wold have no idea of the pain For about three hours couldnt move my legs or my toes Twitliout every muscle going into knot But my recovery was fast and was able to meet the gang at the Brookdale for supper and to frequent the dance floor We afll had ball and went home to bed about 1130 pm The next morningl was awake early as my wife and were to meet the riders in Barrie for breakfast As soon as looked out of the window and saw the weather of the tour to Orangeville We had breakfast with the riders and ac companied them for about 10 miles in the car Everyone was riding good in the rather cool weather when we left them If you ride bicycle and want to have some fun try bicycle ptour The Ontario Recreational Cycling Association has many vtours each year
