2AThe Barrio Examiner Frid Au ust 271976 GRYPHON THEATRE Mulcahy Making sure subscribers are not disappointed By MURIEI LEEPER Sean Mulcahy artistic direc tor of The Gryphon Theatre Company has become per sonality in the city Feeling sometimes like superstar Mulcahy is known and recognized wherever he ventures in town Whether he is shopping or meandering people approach him to discuss some of his productions or just talk about theatre The Irishborn actordirector has been acclaimed in in numerbale roles on radio television stage and films in anada and has brought his ex tensive ex rience and rare talent and ills to Barrie We are nearing the end of Mulcahys third season here This last season has com pared artistically with the best of theatre offered north of the border The five plays chosen for 1976 were promoted as Five great milestones of the American Theatre They have all been comedies some of them with 600 Tom and Jerry overtones of nostalgia some with bittersweet flavor but from the opening play of the summer Harvey audiences have chuckled with enjoyment as they left Georgian College Theatre Discussing his tenure here as artistic director Mulcahy said At the time came to Barrie three years ago it seems like only three weeks the first play presented was the Last of the Red Hot Lovers Now we are finishing very successful season with another Neil Simon play The Prisoner of Second Avenue THEY WANT IT Talking about attendance Sean Mulcahy said find that sales are not con games but really sales People want to come It seems that many husban ds attending because of little pressure made point of in forming the vital director that they are certainly coming back to enjoy the final play Mulcahy said that he wished to pay special tribute to Dora 101 Br CHll00nS Grape Run scription section of the Guild My job he said is to see that the subscribers are not disappointed But if she and her committee continue to have success it could quite easily happen that all seats will be sold out before next season opens The Irish director feels he has comfortable rapport with the Georgian Foundation Guild and the board PERSONALITY They are not only my em ployers but we are friends he said And that can bedifficult because can be cranky bad tempered and Irish There is nothing mystifying about theatre he went on as we discussed theatre in general theatre is just few people getting together to tell story regard myself as storyt eller Perhaps that is what is singular about this man He seems to radiate an aura of fascinating storyteller His mind is quick and alert his wit natural and as he speaks the storyteller in him comm to the fore One can listen to him iii amazement for lengthy periods and be continuously stimulated While discussing special matinees for students Mulcahys enthusiasm for this area of theatre became most apparent POPULAR IDEA In Edmonton with the Citadel Theatre he instigated af ternoon oerformancts on both Saturday and Sunday for the student at cost of $1 or seven plays for $7 He said these shows were the bestattended and followmg the performances long sessions were held with students freely discussing the play or acting with the cast Undoubtedly theatre has become part of the lives of some of the students They will always love the thetre Theatre always belonged to the people Mulcahy went on It has been taken away from the people for various reasons costs of productions ticket prices But we must not deprive people from going to plays So we try to keep the ticket prices down without spoiling productions and without going deeply into the red GOOD PRESS Mulcahy feels that one of the reasons that this season is so successful is because The Gryphon Theatre has had ex ceptional press Toronto as well as local papers have praised the Gryphon Theatre and since opening with Harvey there has been no bad press There is no question about it the development over the past three seasons is an unqualified success cant help feeling that theatre is going to be very important in thiscity It must be remembered that the on Theatre is the brainchi of early voyageuis seven years ago Brian Rintoul the first direc tor had the hard work of initiating professional theatre in city with small population and of producing plays in an unairconditioned theatre PATFORMAT Looking ahead to the 1977 season the company will con tinue with the Willatt close Eu ropewatchers for the past dec ade have come up with well researched work shedding light on such diverse topics as why Campbells condensed soup failed to break into the British market the British consumer refused to dilute it and inSisted on pouring it straight from the can and why American man agement so often fails it is too militaristic and authoritariani The authors maintain that Europe finally is turning the tide of the American business invasion which started after the Second Aorld War and now 15 carrying the battle itito Amert can territory Wllll some noteworthy Sean Yasey or len nessee Williams lie is reading Canadian plays assessing them for possible product ion The demanding director is in tent on making theatre vital and important part of the lives of the people of this commiuiity His eyes twinkled as he discussed the final play of this season The last one could be the best he said Any businessman would understand that the best should be kept to the
