hand There are the suntanned tourists often in family clusters and usually making their selections by whim or hat pm There is the standardbred backbone the people who own train or drive horses or have some direct link with the sport of harness racing There are the fanatics wholl travel many miles to get to harness racing betting outlet or maybe just any betting outlet And then there is that clientele that falls into none of the above categories the work ing man or woman from Barrie and area who has found trip to the Raceway to be an enjoyable and not necessarily expensive night of entertainment Iatrons of that type are showing up more often and in greater numbers than ever before and are part of the reason Barrie Raceway gan now embark on an expansion program General manager Earl Rowe Jr confirmed yersterday that Harrie Raceway Holdings Ltd has awarded contract to Ben torswell Construction Ltd for onestorey addition to the west end of the grandstand The addition will provide an additional parimutuel area new 120seat lounge ac commodation for future snack bar and approximately 200 new theatretype seats The seating area will be glassedin Mr Rowe said the expansion with an estimated cost of $150000 is expected to be com pleted by December Its the second expansion pro ject at the Raceway and first to the grandstand since it opened for operation Dec 19 1973 The first major addition was new barn last year The general manager said that increased patronage dur VICKY BEAN admires Swift Orbit hat prior to the eighth race at Barrie Raceway Or ing the summer months was one of the major reasons that the project was going ahead Attendance in the summer is up substantially Its the first summer weve been allowed to race Friday and Saturday even ings said Mr Rowe He explained that in previous years the Ontario Racing Commission and the federal de artment of agricul ture ha limited Barrie Raceway to Monday and Wednesday night racing in the summer They felt we were in the wrong zone to race three nights week last year They saw conflict with Owen Sound which used to have Friday rac ing he said Mr Rowe said that Harrie reapplied for new dates last December ORC and Agriculture Canada relented and granth Barrie its request of Wednesday Friday and Saturday night racing yearround Barrie is now con sidered part of circuit with Orangeville which has Iues day Thursday and Sunday rai ing he said The general manager esti mated that attendance this summer represented an in crease of 10 per cent over the average winter turnout The average nightly betting total however has stayed about the same slightly over $74000 This is where the more con servativc patron the man or woman new to the game and therefore likely light bettor has bolstered the Barrie statistics Though the per capita betting has actually decreased six per cent this summer Barrie is maintaining its winter handle in spite of the competition for horses and patrons from small tracks in the area open only during the summer months Mr Rowe said that studies have shown the bulk of Barrie Raceways average crowd of bits goodluck baseball cap caused few amused stares but they werent laughing Barrie Raceway plans expansion 1400 lives within radius of 30 miles of the city We really didnt figure on more than that in our projec tions You shouldnt expect any great returns much before five years with proposition of this type It takes five years to educate the public to the fact that there isa track in town and that harness racing is night of entertainment where you dont have to bet or even buy pro gram hesaid The general manager says he is pleased with the growth of the raceway Weve experienced some financial losses the last three years Any investor should have expected rough times for the first three or four years The investors believe are pleased with the operation to date The raceway is owned by private coijmration of which 4648 per cent interest is held by Harrie businessmen the bal ance by the Rowe family The corporation gets 12 per cent of the iniitiiel handle Seven per cent goes to the On tario government and per cent to the federal government said Mr Rowe He emphasized that mole than half of the corporations share of the handle goes direct ly to the harness racing horsemen in the form of pursei Distribution of monies bet is strictly supervised by the On tario Racing Commission Ag ricullure anada and the ana dian Trotting Association he added Mr Rowe said popular misconception is the belief that one beats the track it he leaves with more money than became with That surplus is coming from somebody else at the track from some other patron or patrons he clarified Basical ly all we do is provide betting service to the public when he finished cond in his race
