8The Barrie Examiner Friday August 13 I976 By EDHARPER Ihay Its at times like this when sit down to write my col umn that envy columnist like Rimstead who although he has to write daily column can write about anything at all He even makes column out the insignificant happenings of his daily life am on vaca tion now and although have been playing lot of golf it would take more than Rim stead to make an interesting column out of my golf play My other occupation this week of painting the house led me to believe had surefire tip for the second race at Barrie Raceway on Wednesday night when saw that Steady Painter was running But he let me down and ddint even finish in the money After watching the Olympic Games solidly for two weeks it takes little time to become in volved in sports again though this is time of varied sports events to watch Right now we have baseball and football and believe it or not iii couple of weeks time we will be watching hockey when the anada up series starts That is provided politics doesnt get into the act again The television coverage of the Olympics was fantastic and we see so iiiiicfi sport on TV that we get accustomed to watching sports IIIl instant replays and slow motion replays from dit terent angles The iewing audience sees replays ot questionable calls too and it has been suggested that the officials at game should be able to review call on screens in cases where there is dispute But think how that would slow the game down and we all know how llllr portant the camera angle is The same play can look very different when viewed from dit tcrenct directions In the Olympic iames of coursc electronic timers are used in swimming events to record times down to ten thousandths of second and plltfltlrllllltlS have replaced judges at the liniin line in track events Some of the controversial events in sports history have been explained by taking the films of the events which were slowed down and analyzed frame by frame These events are described in fascinating book called Ilay SPORTS BEL Controversy haunts sport It Again Bud by Bud Greenspan which has been part of my vacation reading Such events as Clem McCar thy calling the wrong winner of the 1947 Preakness are ex plained From the films of the race and McCarthys radio commentary the author was able to show that in two second interval the leadiing horses changed positions at the exact time that McCarthys view of the race was blocked when spectators in the infield climbed onto the starting gate which had been pulled aside Till his death McCarthy never could understand how he had made the mistake but this book shows how easily it hap pended The controversial long count in the 1927 Tunney Dempsey heavyweight cham pionship fight was shown to have lasted 14 and onehalf seconds because the referee waited for Dem sey to go to neutral corner efore starting the count the second time However the films also show that Tunney could probably have got up in count of ten had the referee started the count immediately when he went down The first time motion pic tures were used to correct decision that had been made in the Olympic Games was in Lon don iii t948 when the Arthur Rank Organization was filming all the events In the mens too meter relay the American winning team was initially disqualified when two British judges claimed that the baton had been illegally passed outside the passing zone This then moved the British team into first place to win their only gold medal in the track and field events The American team pror tested the decision however and the films taken by Ar thur Rank from two different directions were reviewed They showed that the officials had confused the markings on the track and that the exchange had been legal The decision was reversed and the American team was awarded the gold medal Nineteen other controversies are explained in the book As long as human judges continue so will the contriwersies And of course the players are human too and can make mistakes Were sports ever to become dehumanized they would fast lose their appeal Threehitter is foiled by first inning flurry Mike Hailey tossed three hitter against toiivcrtible Pools and still lost the game Ihttrsday toiivcrtiblc lools struck for two rims inn the first inning then held on for the in over chtorswcll and 24 lead in the best of five quarter finals
