Penetanguishene to Fort York in Toronto The trip starts Monday and the Guard will arrive in Toronto on Aug 14 The Guard will be in Barrie Tuesday and will give three musket demonstrations The first will be at pm at Johnson St School playgrounds the second at pm in Memorial Square and the third at 530 at Centennial Park Students duplicate long march in walk to Torontos Fort York The famous military mar ches of the 1830s from the garrison at Penetanguishene to Torontos Fort York will be re enacted next week by members of the Historic Naval and Military Establishments Guard from Penetanguishene The six soldiers and two shipwright sailors plan to walk about 80 of the 104 mile distance to Fort York The first leg is from Penetanguishene to Barrie then following the original military route the Guard will board boat at Kempenfelt Bay Barrie and travel by water to Bradford near the original landing at Holland Landing From there they walk to Toronto The en tire venture will take six days Upon arrival in Fort York the camera of the Establish ments Guard will present to the Fort York commander the or ders to change the military unit posted at Penetanguishene The following day Sunday August 15 the Guard will participate in Fort Yorks annual military tattoo Stewart Day Leaving the Establishments an historic reconstruction of tilth century British naval base and military garrison operated by the Ontario Ministry of ulture and Recreation at 830 tn Monday the men expect to reach Hillsdale on Highway 93 some 19 miles away by ii During the first day the Guard will give demonstrations of musket firing and drill cxcr cises at Midland Wycvalc Waverley and Ilillsdale The rounds they Wlll be firing Wlll beblanks INTOBARRIE Tuesday the group will mar ch to tratghurst where they Wlll give musket firing demonstration tit the RDA Campground then continue down Highway 93 to Highway t1 and into Barrie by Dunlap Street It is hoped that it demon stration can be held in down town Barrie iii late afternoon before the Guard marches to enteitnial Park at the foot of Victoria Street deitioiLstration including ceremonial load qutck fires firing Wllh front rank kneeling and bayonet charge Vt ill be per formed in entennial Park at about Jttp Early in the morning of the third day the Guard will board boat which will take ll to within few miles of Bradford on the Holland Itiyer where the men Alll change to two canoes and paddle the remaining distance to Bradford The canoes will he landed near the bridge spanning the Holland River at the southern edge of tow Upon arrival bet ween 1130 and pm the Guard will collect their marching kits which will have been set out in military fashion with the muskets forming pyramids and then perform musket drill for the spectators who gather there The next section of the march will be along old Hi hway 11 to the Holland Lan ing Park operated by the South Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority Another demon stration will be given there at about4pm Only two of the fellows have experience in long distance marching but all eight have been undergoing special training for the past month with assistance from former Olympic marathon walker of Midland The soldiers will march in full uniform replicas of the 24th Regiment of Foot which was postponed to the Establish merits in the late 1830s in cluding nine and half pound musket bayonet with scab bard and crossfelt canteen pack and cartouche Car tridge box with belt The total weight is approximately 20 pounds 0N YOUNG STREET Newmarket Aurora and Oak Ridges will
