we sailed from the dock at Britannia Park in Ottawa At the park there was dance hall hot dog stand and an openair restaurant with roof The hot dog stand and the restaurant were operated by the one and only King Clancy On days when it rained we were unable to operate the boats because very few people would frequent the park The King would also be very slow with his business So being an athlete myself it seemed that on these rainy days Clancy and would end up talking sports by the hour Francis Michael Clancy was very colorful person to know He always seemed to be in joyous mood and seeing him on TV today he hasnt changed much in all these years When King was playing hockey he was rowdy player who knew all the angles and he was the inventor of more than one As referee in theNHL for 11 years he was just as col orful and there wasnt player who could get the last word in on Clancy When King played defence for the Maple Leafs he was on 1y 157 pounds through his best years He was always talking and scrapping and was an inspiration to his teammates with his absolute antipathy for defeat He played hockey for nine years with the Ottawa Senators the greatest team to play hockey in the early 1920s Conn Smythe paid cool $35000 to get King from the Ottawa Senators an unprecedented sum in those days and more so because it was the early years of the Depression Smythe had just built Maple Leaf Gardens and he was already heavily in debt with mortgages People thought that Smythe had lost his marbles in paying so much money for only one player But the King showed his worth for six seasons He made the allstar team four times This did not reflect Clancys ability as player because the first allstar teams did not start until Clancy had been in the league 11 years Clancy played with all the greats of his time and his cons tant jabbering relaxed such great players as Charlie Con acher Joe Primeau Busher Jackson Red Homer and many many more He would send them on the ice like tigers making speeches in the dressing room while standing on rubbing table often stark naked waving his arms in comic gestures In 1932 in the final against New York Rangers Clancv saw that his teammates were uptight and very nervous The Rangers who were led by Frank Boucher with the Cooks Bill and Bun Taffy Abel and the great Ching Johnson were favorites to win the game King jumped onto the rubbing table only partly dressed and yelled have great confidence in our defence but fear for the forwards think youre shooting will be off You big bastards have the look of lambs Ill show you what ex peck He jumped down from the table and the players who had been grim turned to watch the King Clanc went over to pile of hockey sticks selected one threw puck on the floor and took aim at an alarm clock that trainer Tim Daly kept on stool He fired the puck and it smashed the clock leavv ing glass and the works strewn all over the room Clancy casually put the stick back in place and walking to his locker started putting on his hockey gear The room exploded in laughter and Charlie Conacher laughed until he cried Then Charlie went onto the ice and scored three goals The Leafs won 61 and went on to win the series for their first Stanley Cup victory Having spent time with King in Ottawa when he had the food concessions and we had the boats know that anyone who is around him cant stay tense for very long He is combination of comedian philosopher and great gentleman PHILADELPHIA Randy Pierce tAPi rookie right winger with Colorado Rockies was admitted to hospital Thurs day iiigiil after
