Whipper really cares By WERNER BERGEN Examiner Sports Editor He is big and tough Whipper Billy Watson may have at one time been the most feared man in the professional wrestling Circuit but there is more to the man than just bmn ipper Billy Watson cares He cares es ciall for cri pled children in Canada and has been assgeciated with tige Qitano SOCiety for Crippled Children for 30 years Some sports personalities just lend their names to projects and make token appearances on the projects behalf But not Watson Hisfight for crippled children is probably more im portant to him than any fighting laurels he received in his distinguished career It is because he is so involved and spends so much time and probably lot of his own money for the cause that he is taken seriously where ever he goes He is not just another sports hero publicizing needy cause At press conference Wednesday at Molsons Brewery tears were in his eyes as he told stories about some of his ex periences But the stories were not aimed at tugging at heart strings but rather as illustrations for the need the society and these children have feel time is running out to get down and get things doneWatson said Watson said the society was not charity but service to the crippled children and their families Watson said it was important for these people to maintain their dignity and not feel they are recipients of charity Watson was in Barrie to help promote the Snowarama which is fund raising activity for the society by the Barrie Kiwanis Club Collingwood Progress Club and the Huronia Snowmobile Association FLYERS ANl COLTS The Flyers and Colts have new players in their camps The Colts in the MidOntario Junior Hockey League have added three players since the season began and two have worked out well The newcomer defenceman John Cox should prove to be big asset The Colts have needed another defenceman since the season started but have been unable to pick up player with Coxs ability With Cox in the lineup the Colts have good chance of holding down second place and threaten for first The Colts need to defeat Oak Ridges if they hope to get anywhere but have been unable to find the key to Oak Ridges weakness Todd Lalonde and Rick Bowman were picked up by the Colts midway through the season and have strengthened the team Both players are proven goalscorers and have not disappointed the Colts with their performances Its almost like revolving door at the Flyers camp The Ontario Senior Hockey team has seen players come and go and two players have come and gone only to return again Ernie Miller and Terry Agnew left the team month ago Miller retired and Agnew was traded Miller has come out of retirement and the deal for Agnew with Mississauga fell through Millers return will end the Flyers search for second goaltender At one time the Flyers had three goalies only to have Miller and Ron Patterson retire The Flyers have been worried about Dave Johns health Johns was the only remaining goalie and any injury to him would have put the team in bad position of having no goaltender Agnew should give the defensive corps of the Flyers boost Agnew returned to the Flyers for their for the crippled children in Canada and it is something he has been doing for30years Watson was in Barrie Wednesday to officially start the campaign for Whipper Watsons Snowarama for Timmy The fund raising snowmobile ride will take place on Jan 29 with participating riders covering 100 miles CONFERENCE At press conferencc at Molsons Brewery Watson was introduced to Barrics Timmy for 1978 Alexander Thomson son of Mr and Mrs letcr Thomson will rcprcscnt the Ontario Society for Crippled liildrcn in its many fund raising activities in Barrio Snowarama route has been chosen The Snowarama for the On tario Society for Crippled Children on Jan 29 has pro jected target of $100000 to be raised Riders who wish to take the loomile ride can pick up pledge sheets from McDonalds Restaurant snowmobile dealers snowmobile clubs and some variety stores in Barrie The starting points for the Snowarama ride will be at the McDonalds Restaurant in Bar rie Wasaga Beach Snowmobile Clubhouse and the Huron Highlands clubhouse inColl ingwood ROUTE The route for the ride will be from the McDonalds in Barrie to Midhurst Station past Midhurst Forestry Station to Anten Mills and Hendrie Sta tion The route then turns near Phelpston bypassing Jack lake to Oakview Beach and cross country to Huron Highlands The return ride is past Not The Barrie Flyers of the Ontario Senior Hockey ERNIE MILLER returns tawa Batteux to Brocks Beach and then along Springhurst and Wasaga Beaches turning to Orr Lake and back through Midhurst to the starting point There will be 10 check points along the route STARTING Riders will be starting simultaneously from Barrie Collingwood and Wasaga Beach Trails and services will be supplied by the Huronia Snowmobile Association who has over 1000 miles of groomed trail in Simcoe York and Gray Counties Starting time is 711 am on Jan 29 The proceeds from Snowarama go to the Ontario Society for Crippled Children to assist in the rehabilitation of physically handicapped children in Ontario Half of the funds raised are retained by the clubs for direct services in Bar rie and Collingwood League had two new faces at their practice Wednesday night at the Barrie Arena The faces were not exactly new but they hadnt been seenthcreinawhile Ernie Miller and Terry Agnew are back with the Flyers RETIRED Miller rctired month ago citing business commit ments as his reason for netirement Agnew had been traded to the Mississauga Golden Arrows for cash and the right to talk to goaltender Steve Restivo Miller said he missed play ing hockey Miller said he couldnt resist returning after seeing the Flyers play theRussians Miller said he had talked his return over with coach Darryl Sly and they had come to an agreement When Sometimes its losing battle in trying leaves over $50X1000 to be raised Watson said some people have suggested that the government take over the society but he never wanted to sec the society losc its volun tocr help They participatc liccausc they believe in it Watson said Watson said the aid given by the society was not charity but service provided by 231 service clubs Its up to them to see the child is provided for Watson said Watson said he appreciated the work done by the Kiwanis Club of Barrie the Huronia Snowmobile Association and the Progress Club of Collingwood in the Snowarama Watson said he also ap preciated the work done by Molsons Brewery in promoting the event because this way every dollar donated to the society goes to it as one dollar When something is needed people will help Watson said We appreciate the effort you people are putting forth It will be success because of you who are working SICCESS It will be success as long as you believe in what you do Watson said Rick Hubbert president of the Central Zone of the liuronia Snowmobile Association said this was the first time the association had become in volved in the Snowarama Hubbert said the association had been approached last year to help but because of time they were not able to get behind the 10th 100 per cent If we cant do good job we wont take it Hubbert said SNOWARAMA Hubbert said this would be the best Snowarama ever run in Ontario He said the route was chosen for its scenic value and it was the best in Huronia You know if you have ever snowmobiled in Huronia we have some pretty country Hubbert said Hubbert said one of the biggest drawbacks to snowmobile runs of this kind was that the trails deteriorated into humps and bumps with the volume of traffic The Barrie Colts of the Mid Ontario Junior Hockey League have
