In New York was Americas first nudist organ By PAUL DELICAN Examiner Staff Writer After extxricncing major boom in the late 1900s and early 1970s live albums appeared to be on the wane circa 1074 But then along came Peter Brampton with It IWorecord set called Frampton onics Alive sales at last count of 14 millionl and the flow was reversed Live albums are once again in vogue as any glance at the bestsellers chart will confirm Three recent releases gathering considerable at tention are tworecord con cert packages from 10cc Live and Let Live Nils Lofgren Night After Night and The Commodores Livel Each is an interesting entertaining and smooth pro duction yet all three strike me as inferior to the studio creations that preceded them The Commodores recently named top rhythm and blues group of 1977 by Rolling off sensational year They had two monster hits in Easy and Brick House after lesser successes the year before in Sweet Love and Just To Be Close to You All four tunes are on Live Motown M894AZ which is good Not so good is the fact Deleon on records Its live album Time once more charts show Stone magazine are coming that two of them Sweet Love and ltrick House are intcr niptcd by lengthy mono logues directed at the an dience The Brick House dance contest may well have been great fun at the concert in Atlanta but it starts getting this Barrie listeners nerves at the third hearing I2SONGS There are 12 songs on the album They tend to be overlong but the variety and crosssection of material is definite plus The standouts are ballads Easy and Just To Be Close To You and the Snappy Too Hot Ta Trot The Commodores are ob viously crowdpleasers and they certainly retain their tight but light touch in con cert Still not much new ground is covered here The studio album Com modores better combine precision and concision and would probably be better investment for those con templating Commodores purchase Night After Night and SP 3707 15song collec tion from Nils Lofgren suf fers from different problem repetition The 2ryearold guitarist Ins punchy straight for ward rock style that would seem ideally suited to spirited live performance And it is Together with his fiveman group Lofgren delivers cngngingly spunky versions of times like Back It Up Moon Tears Code Of The Itoud and Incidentally Its Over The material however lacks variety and to hear similar songs tackled with the same ap roach for 80 minutes un ermines the overall attraction of the work Night After Night contains enough memorable music to have made one splendid solo album As tworecord set it remains occasionally brilliant but not wholly satisfying The 10cc package Live and Let Live Phillips 6641 714 suffers from an oven dose of Deceptive Bends the groups last album Of 15 songs on the live col lection eight are taken from Deceptive Bends Thats only one less than the total on that album It was certainly fine work but hardly one that needed to be rehashed almost in its entirety only matter of months after its release 1th SELECTIONS The balance of Live and Let Live consists of two selections each from albums How Dare You and The Original Soundtrack and three others Thats hardly an even distribution 10cc has pro duced six albums Memorable tunes like Rub ber Bullets Flying Junk Wanna Rule The World and Dont Hang Up are noticeany absent here The concert performance of the 15 tunes is as disciplin ed sophisticated and impec cable as 10ccs studio work no small achievement given the difficulty of reproducing songs like Im Not In Love and Feel The Benefit in less controlled environment Wall Street Shuffle People In Love and Second Sitting For The Last Su per are especially well han led The album marks the recording debut of the new 10cc Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart who car ried the name alone on Deceptive Bends alter loun ding members Lol Creme and Kevin Godley left the fold have recruited four new players to fill out the sound All four seem to fit in well enough especially guitarist Hic Fenn As showcase for 10ccs recent output Live and Let Live is an attractive com pilation skilfully performed But for those already won over by the group who may already have two or three of its albums this is all familiar territory revisited The only revelation is the groups concert competence 4me On worstdressed list Country singer Dolly larton left actesss Farrah
