The only difference is in discipline and Olllts are not used to being handled quite as much as horses so they object more The pony photo at right If the shoes fit placed on sedatives toa public school their father refuses to pay $1800 in extra tuition to the public school board Photo tuitions over and above normal taxes if they wish their children to attend public school That is my right as Canadian to educate my children in the Human Rights Act makes that very clear said Schmidt who last year designated his taxes to the public school system Heidi fought back tears in an interview when she ex plained that her principal called her into the office and told her that this was the most inhumane thing he had ever had todo but she would have to leave the school cried and my best friend plans to put on hundreds of pairs of shoes in the next few years She also hopes to butld up good stock of shoes over the winter The shoes in this case are little different than what the average girl would he in crusted they are horse shoes and she will be mak ing many of them herself llorseshocing is something lve always wanted to learn because Ive been around horses all my lite she said losic attended lCastvitw Secondary School Ill Barrie and has worked for three years for Bill Maleomson of rown Ilill who raises standardbrcd roadster horses While working for Malconr son losie spent much of her time exercising and training the horses which are similar to the ones which race at the Bar ric Raceway trained the horses to behave when being hitched and unhitchcd trained them to stand still back up and to show good style when being shown forjurlging But Ive wanted to get into shoeing so took an eightweek course at the Canadian Na tional School of llorscshrwing in Mount Albert she said While there Iosic learned how to make liorscsliocs from bar of steel how to put them on and the various types of shoes and their purposes UNDERSTAND HORSES Theres more to horseshoe ingthanmeetstheeye You have to have an understanding of horses to do this job Its hard to explain either you haveitor you dont Its sort of horse sense They have good and bad days just like us and you have to sense this There are no two horses alike Posie said Maleomson said he has been raising horses for many years and he has had some that Posie could handle better than he could She can drive any horse own he said PETS WORST Kids horses which are used as pets are harder to handle than any trained highstrung show horse This is because they dont have the discipline They might be wonderful and gentle with the kids but when they have to do something they arent used to and dont want to do such as having their feet at tended to they wont behave Posie says the first thing she has to do is show the horse whos boss Once they know wont stand for any fooling around they usually quiet down and let me get the job done The 22yearold blacksmith says she very seldom has to use face she stands fivefoot three and weighs about 115 pounds If they dont quiet down sometimes use twitch twitch is an apparatus which is placed in the horses nose and twisted so it numbs the nose Posie says the sensa tion takes his mind off what is being done to his feet DRRECTIVESHOES Posie has learned ways of correcting many problems horse may have through ad justing weights and thicknesses of its shoes There are about 20 different types of shoes one horse could wear Sometimes weight is put on with small steel bars to cor rect the problem of horse throwing its feet to the inside or outside loe weighting makes the horse lift his feet higher and gives him more style when be ing shown Posie says most saddle horses wear very plain shoe to protect the foot from slipping splitting or getting bruised tromstones The biggest problem horses havc with their back feet is when the back leg comes up too fast and hits the front leg or foot before it can get out of the way In this case would put trailer on the back foot causing the problem trailer is an extended heel put on to catch the ground It curves out on ttic side of the shoe and is placed on the back feet only TRISIMINH FEET Horses hooves should be trimmed every six to eight weeks all year round Posie says lipping depends on the horse itself and how fast its hooves grow The procedure for big and small horses is basical ly the same lipping their feet is much the same as clipping your own fingernails If you cut your own too short the end of your finger is tender and if you cut the nail more it will bleed The same thing happens with horses foot losic uses gauge to measure the correct angle of horses hoof as it is being clip pcd This is very important to en sure that both feet are level and sitting on the ground at the same angle Posies duties as blacksmith also include keep ing an eye out for corns thrush and contracted heels Thrush is disease of the foot caused from improper cleaning and wet stables Corns and contracted heels are caused by impro er shoe ing Its from shoes ing too tight which causes the foot to draw in The same thing hap pens if the shoes are left on too long without being changed ACCEPTED AS FEMALE How does Posie find people react to her being female blacksmith Im accepted very well although think some people call me to see if can really do the job When Im introduced to so meone new and they are told Im blacksmith their response is usually Are you really blacksmith and then they want to know all about my jobshesaici guess people are usually surprised by it all Posie says marriage is the furthest thing from her mind right now plan to set up my own business in this area So far lmjust parttime Being blacksmith requires strong back and Posie has that even though she is fairly small well thats good Its really not so much brute strength involved as know how She plays hockey broomball and baseball and is member of the roJets Hockey team DE OF ETHICS Blacksmiths have their own code of ethics as do other pro ftssions and Rosie is no excep tion You dont talk about another blacksmiths work when you go to job Even if you dont think what they did was right you just do your job well and leave it at that You dont talk about work done on other farms either For example if man has some horses he shows or races he may do some corrective work to make them perform better and he doesnt want that known by others And thats right its nobody elses business When you shoe these horses Malconisons Roadsters you dont just come in and throw on pair of shoes Sometimes it is necessary to do shoeing three or four times to get correction nght Those four feet have to hit the ground exactly when they are supposed to Posie says people who buy horses either for themselves or their children and dont know how to look after them create big problem for blacksmiths blacksmith can only do so much with what he or she is given to work with Theypush pyjamas TORONTO CP Maggie Bill and Barbara Semwick like togive pyjama parties They are vacation spoiled or cut short Its because they developed chills and hot flushes before packing their bags Not from the winters wind or an overheated home but from lack of estrogen Their doctors prescribed this female hormone and quickly stopped bothersome symptoms Yet in the rush of his office he forgot towam the patient how estrogen can ruin holiday Women who journey south are particularly vulnerable to this trouble The majority are either at or past the menopause They need estrogen but receive it at the wrong time Estrogen like new pair of shoes is best tried while youre at home Why do women start estrogen just prior to tri south Psychologically people like to see doctor be ore leaving on holdiday Sometimes it may spot problem 65 year old woman will be found to suffer from senile vaginitis and require estrogen to restore the vaginal lining normal thickness Others will have menopausal symptoms that necessitate this hormone Still others are simply at the age when some doctors believe its sound idea to start estrogen replacement therapy ERT Most women are grateful for the treatment Yet after their arrival in Florida few will develop postmenopausal bleeding good many will worry about the possibility of cancer And the fun is suddenly gone WHAT HAS HAPPENED What has happened to cause the bleeding Estrogen has numerous effects on the body One purpose is to stimulate the inside endometrial lining of the uterus during the reproductive years At this time the endometrium is highly responsive to estrogen and it becomes thicker in preparation for possible pregnancy Later on in life the withered endometrium does not react as much to estrogen Yet on occasion it still has enough get up and go left in it to produce spotting or outright bleeding What should ou do if this happens in Florida It basically epends on the timing If it occurs couple of weeks before returning home you may as well wait to see you own doctor But send him letter explaining what has happened This should ensure prompt appointment on your arrival back in Canada But if the bleeding occurs several weeks before scheduled return there are two choices You should fly north immediately or see Florida necologist It may result in wasted trip home Most like and will reveal benign polyp fibroid or merely prove that the bleeding was due to estrogen stimulation of the endometrium Yet much better to cut vacation short than delay for months and then discover that cancer had been present Never never procrastinate by waiting to see if the bleeding will occur again Its an approach that could cost you your life And if your own doctor or the one in Florida tells you the trouble is due to estrogen without an examination or and get another opinion Is there any way to prevent mining Florida vacation Theres no one hundred per cent method but you can trim tle chance by following few simple rules NEVER PACK NEW DRUGS Remember never to pack new shoes or new drugs in your suitcase If youre having menopausal symptoms or just want checkup see the doctor long before you head south In the event you require estrogen theres ample time to adjust the dosage to your own needs Taking the lowest possible dose will decrease the risk of abnormal bleeding Its also wise not to push the doctor towards estrogen if youve suddenly read an article stressing the benefits of ERT If you havent needed estrogen for the last ten years you can do without it at least until after your return from Florida Women with senile vaginitis who need treatment can tanporarily sidetrack the oral estrogen tablets or the intra muscular injections This problem can be cured easily with local estogen cream Since only small amount is absorbed by the bod postmenopausal bleeding is rarely en countered hen on returning home oral estrogen can be started USE COMMON SENSE Whether in Florida or at home women must use common sense in taking estrogen But in the past two years this hormone hasi been badly bruised reports linking it to cancer Every week see patients have decided to stop taking it Or are reluctant to start strogen when it could cure an annoying symptom Dont forget that estrogen is still valuable hormone In later article Ill tell you how it can be taken sensibly in 1908 Letters can be sent to PD Box 55 Niagara Falls Ontario LZE 688 If you wish reply enclose stamped self addressed envelope
