ETHIOPIA Festival blends richness poverty fly IZRICMY ItlYII KUIIRI IIllnopia tRcutcrt The mountain sun flashes from the gold crosses of the Coptic priesthood to the coins tossed beside the running sores of hundreds of crippled beg gars The discordant bell of the Church of St labiiel mingles with the cries of women hoping for the saints blessing during the coming year The pungent smell of incense and candles clashes with rich aromas from thousand cook ing pots scattered around the hillsides This is the Festival of St iar briel at Kulubi in eastern IJth iopia ceremony which blends richness and poverty deep do votion and irreverent gaiety in to one of the most spectacular events of the hristian calen dar in Ethiopia The people who have walked for two lays from the city of Dire Dawa 35 miles away in the lowlands are carrying out promises made to the saint whose Ethiopian face gazes down from the unattractivcly modern church perched atop small hill IlMISARILlS The climb into the mountains is tough yet many of the walk ers look like city youngstersout for country stroll complete with platform shoes and jeans Some women more radit ion ally dressed in white cotton carry babies on their backs The night before the actual ceremony the hills around Kur lubi are packed with people many having made the it00inile journey from Addis Ababa along the dusty twisting road in varieton vehicles ranging from rickety buses to expensive cars The multicolored tents of the wealthy spread out on one side with the hastily built grass huts for the less fortunate on the other attle excitement is growing there is no tension At the church virtually unused for the rest of the year because this is largely Mos leni area the faithful jostle to get inside IMIIRICIIIS SUI Inside the receive gifts suppose we all do If you try just little Im sure that you can remember some time in the past when you got something which really made you happy and your remark probably went like this This is just what wanted At other times you may have had other reactions can remember when was young how one of my cousins used to give my mother ex pensive gifts for her birthday or Christmas imagine one reason for this was that she worked for large department store and got things at quite discount But it was standing Joke in the family because the POINTS TO PQNDEB God is in control of storms and sunsets By DOROTHY KllilllRN Look at the beauty of that sunset lady exclaimed to her husband You know she continued always feel close to God when see beautiful sunset or rainbow Sometime later tornado warning waas given in her town While the liglniing flash ed the thunder boomed the lady walked the floor wringing her hands in fear Then the lights went out and sheer panic gripped her You had better get hold of yourself her husband told her When you see beautiful sunset you feel so close to iod but when it storms you are ter rifled Is your faith in the iod of the sunsets or the God of the storms You know believe in one God she answered Then act likeit Iler husbands remark caus ed the woman to gain the vic tory over her fear by realizing that her God was God of the storms as well as the away sin or Im glad for the gift but not very in uch The fact is we all need Saviour because we cannot erase even one of the many sins weve committed We cannot earn forgiveness for one sin If we had every other thing in the world and lid not have the Saviour as our own personal Saviour we could never get to heaven or even go through life with purpose and confidence Iass up this gift this person
