10 The Barrie Examiner Friday February 18 1977 When Silky fell short By ED HARPER Chay In my sports room among the thousands of sports mementos have pair of front plates horseshoes that were used on horse called Silky Sullivan when he won the Santa Anita Derby in 1958 also have picture of Silky Sullivan standing in his stall with his head out nuzzling his trainer Reggie Cornell The reason am writing this piece about Silky Sullivan is to show my readershow they can be fooled into betting on horse because of his reputation Silky Sullivan got lot of publicity because of two races that he ran as three year old at Santa Anita Race Track In 612 furlong race early in the year he was more than 40 lengths behind the field at one point in the race but came on in the stretch to win going away Then in the same year at the 1958 Santa Anita Derby he came from almost 30 lengths back to win again this time by three lengths The great Willie Shoemaker was the regular jockey on Silky Sullivan who was beautiful big impressive looking chestnut horse His good looks and exciting style of coming from behind had all the fans and the sportswriters making Silky their hero The sportswriters were filling the sports pages of papers all over the world with stories and pictures of Silky dont believe that many other horses up to that time had received the kind of publicity that he did Silky Sullivan was made the favorite to win the Ken tucky Derby that year and when he was shipped from California where he had won those few races in impressive style coming from what seemed like impossible distances behind the pace to win handily he had special train to take him to the Derby He was everyones favorite and no matter where you went the talk was about the super horse that could come from 30 or 40 lengths back and win But actually Silky Sullivan the wonder horse wasnt good horse at all He had just beaten some of the mediocre horses when he won the few races out in California One per son who knew this was his jockey Willie Shoemaker but Willie liked riding Silky for he was good horse to ride and never gave the jockey any problems Reggie Cornell one of the top trainers in the US also must have known that his horse wasnt good enough for the Kentucky Derby but with all the publicity the horse had received it was almost an impossibility not to take him to Kentucky for the biggest race of all People were coming from all over the world to see the wonder horse and to disappoint the fans who pay the dollars would have been foolish So on Kentucky Derby day in 1338 Silky Sullivan was in the race and if any horse in the field looked like champion as they paraded onto the track to the musical strains of My Old Kentucky Home it was Silky Sullivan Big muscular and proudlooking as he went postward As soon as the horses left the starting gate Silky went to the back of the field but this day he was running with the best and there was no way that he could make up ground to the likes of Tim Tam who went on to win the race The bubble had burst for Silky as he finished 12th in field of 14 and was beaten 20 lengths by Tim Tam The fans all believed that Silky Sullivan was not at his best on that day and began to tout him for the Preakness Most of the news media jumped on the bandwagon and Silky was once more the wonder horse who had bad day in the Kentucky Derby but Would redeem himself in the Preakness Sullivan the wonder horse But it was not to be and Silky went back to California beaten horse Tim Tam had won the Preakness also leaving Silky Sullivan away up the track in eighth place In two big races the fans had made Silky the favorite when he shouldnt have been Those who were at the Kerr tucky Derby and the Preakness in 1958 would not that they saw Tim Tam win but that they had seen Silky ORAN GEVILLE ENTRIES First Raceline Mile Trot lm 835i Ren Willowhill Boy Tourbai Byroii LcBlanc Campbell Jets Ena Hopkins 5Gladys Brooks Ruff StacyC Dixon DarnLJtm
