By ED HARPER Chay The sport of fishing through the ice has grown on Lake Simcoe over the years The first fish huts began to appear on the lake in the 1900s By 1950 there were about 800 huts on the ice each winter and in the 19605 more than 4000 huts were recorded Recently 3600 huts have been counted at the peak of the season Many people own fish huts but there are 37 commercial hut operators around the lake who have rental capacity for 2190 anglers at one time An estimated 65000 to 70000 anglers par ticipate in winter fishing on Lake Simcoe each year Most fish hut operators have four and six man huts The fish that are caught in Lake Simcoe during the winter season are Whitefish lake trout herring yellow perch pike and smelt Whitefish are bottom feeders whereas herring lake trout smelt and perch are not commonly bottom feeders Due to the fish stocking program lake trout are presently on the increase Lake Simcoe is being stocked with 100000 lake trout per year Yearlings and twoyearold trout are planted an nually to supplement the natural stocks Stocked lake trout now comprise 15 to 20 per cent of the trout harvest The perch population is also expanding each year in Lake Simcoe Perch are becoming more and more important in the winter fishery Perch are especially enjoyable because they are easy to catch It takes little more than hook and bait anything from worms to lures and youre in business The Ministry of Natural Resources is vitally concerned about the management and perpetuation of the fish populations in Lake Simcoe It has been carrying out biological investigations in the lake for several years If any of you fishermen should happen to catch Whitefish or lake trout with tag attached to it you are asked to submit the tag to the Ministry The return of these fish tags greatly assists the fisheries in their effort to manage the fish population in Lake Simcoe If you havent tried ice fishing why not give it try this Win ter But do it the safe sure way Contact one of the fish hut operators and he will take you out on the ice to your assigned hut and will make sure you are comfortable before leaving you there Most of the fish hut operators in Huronia have been in the business for many years They know when and where to go on the ice and they also know the best places to situate their huts By letting an experienced operator look after you youre not only playing it safe but you will be sure of having better chan ce of big catch Good fishing HOCKEY NOTESGlen Richardson great young hockey prospect now playing for Tulsa Oilers in the Central League is
