¢J=fi 12 The Barrie Examiner Wednesday January 51977 SPORTS CORNER Oldtimers teams at Lefroy Arena every Tuesday faceoff at Games By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor The established and the new meet in the Oldtimers hockey game at the Barrie Arena Sunday Barrie Credit Union Oldtimers hockey club been around for few years and has proven itself competitive team in both local and international competition Newest member to the American Hotel Oldtimers te Oldtimers fraternity is the am These two clubs meet as part of the Huronia Winter Games which resume Friday with live sports on the run Both Oldtimers clubs have been active this season in ex hibition competition The one time they met it was American Hotel coming out with 32 win American Hotel tied Huntsville 11 in more recent play Highlights of each Oldtimers hockey season centre around their trips on the tournament trail Credit Union has its sights set on Switzerland this season and the European international Hockey Tournament Both Oldtimers clubs will be competing in the annual CanadaUnited States international tournament just few weeks in the future This tournament is in Niagara Falls American Hotel will be in New Brunswick Feb 1821 to compete in still another tournament Both clubs use funds raised from tickets sales whether it be side of beef or bundle of cheer to help defray the mam moth cost of participating in these tournaments They are looking for continued public support in their fundraising programs Game time Sunday is pm Huronia Winter Games are primarily for the local athlete Five games were held late in December and quite suc cessfully with perhaps the lack of response to wrestling the one sore spot number of events used the December segment as qualifying round for the Ontario Winter Games in North Bay in February Although labelled as part of the Huronia Games they have to be classnied as outSide events which would have been held anyway The remaining 14 games are for Huronia that broad band circling Simcoe County The games reach into almost every community to draw out competitors The fact that medals are offered to the winners turns the Games into competitive function This is important as it offers the opportunity for athletes and teams to test themselves under actual game conditions But what is more important and something continually stressed by the Greater Huronia Sports CounCil GHSC Is partiCipation Get out and partiCipate Get involved Try it for once shirk the stigma of losmg lhats the goal of the Huronia Games Noone is saying these particular events are highclass lhe obJect is to offer leagues teams indiViduals oftiCiaIs referees organizers chance to break out of routine and get shot at good com petition lts not going to mean anything unless ther is this mass partiCipation not only by the competitors there is that already in 1800 or so entries but in getting the support from the communities The media has been receptive to the Huronia Winter Games so far Much more than last year when the Games slipped by with bare tremor And thats good It has served to let more people know whats gomg on lot of the blame for this lack of awareness fell last season fell on the shoulders of the Greater Huronia Sports Council In all fairness to the counCil the concept of multisports games in Huronia was new and rather frightening when one considered the work involved There were mistakes made but there was also negative reaction Few knew what the Winter Games were or cared lhis apparently has changed The response cooperation and running of the 197677 HWG has met all expectations to date GLANCING AROUND There was so much activity in Swedens end that we didnt notice Barrie CoOps make goaltending change Paul Jackson was credited With gomg all the way in net for Barrie in the 73 Win by the midgets of the touring Swedish club Sunday In fact Jeff Muniby came in and played half the game lheres Ringette clinic set for Saturday at Guthrie Public School
