43 mix By RICHARD DUNSTAN Examiner Staff Writer Rev John Speers of Barrics Irinity Anglican Church owes the spelling of his last mime to an apparent kidnap and murder which took place more than till years ago lhe entire Speers family is probably descended from Scotsman who fought for lion nie Prince tharhc iii the rebellion of 1745 and fled to Nor thern Ireland alter the Young Pretenders forces were crush ed by King George lls troops at Chilloden An aged greatallot whom Mr Speers second cousin Toronto Star senior editor Borden Spears tiiote the different spelling lived briefly as teenager turns out to have been the sort of woman no man could leave alone when she was younger lhese are Just few of the facts and conjectures enclosed within the lSttodd pages of the Speers Family Album resear ched and written by Rev John Speers and published by Giant Print Ltd of Barrie WANTED TO lit IT have wanted to record the story for long time Mr Speers says Its an in teresting story and think if hadnt gotten it all down it wouldnt have been obtainable in few years lhe task began in 1975 With work on collection of poetry featuring an eightpage epic poem which embodies more than two centuries of history of the Speers and related families Mr Speers an avid poet as youngster had largely given up writing poetry except for special occasions but in 1975 he returned to it with vengeance wit Ii ta An iin tory Ive turned till he explains how and It want to say anything Id better say It soon Writing the epic look smile research into the family luickgroiind Was found out more had to change the epic lint wtiat wally set Mr Speers up for extensive research was the realization that tlie verse would not have sufficient meaning for most lamily iiiemhers unless ac coinmiiied by more prosaic III loriiiation such as lamilv trees SIX IIiNliltAllONS So ttlitt was year of writing and phoning long lost relatives dclvnig into ttic Ontario ar chives and generally leavnlg no stone unturned iii an effort to trace the six generations descended troin Solomon Spears who came from toniity lyroiie to Canada about 1812 Mr Specis also dug up and iii cluded in the album informa tion on the Cassidy family his paternal grandmothers people The result is about 50 pages of verse including the work of 1975 earlier poems and Mr Speers own translations from Irish Gaelic about 40 pages of genealogical material in cluding family trees another 40 of newspaper clippings and old family photographs con tributed by relatives far and wide and variety of other in formation Ihe book available from Giant Print or from Mr Speers costs $10 and the author says he will have to sell most of the press run of 500 to recover his research and printing costs lhe size of the press run mat ches the number of Speers CaSSidys and other family 35 members Mr Speers estimates are nearly enough related to be interested in the album Mr Speers says he tried to make the book as vivid and per sonal as possible and instead of merely listing names has recorded all he could find the aniusmg and the tragic about each person recorded IIIESPEIJJNG For example there is the matter of the spelling At one time it was Speirs but most of the family had settled on Spears by 15 In that year fiveyearold Iara Spears Mr Speers fathers sister disappeared while walking home alone from potatopicking expedition She was never found alive or dead Mr Speers says evidence suggests she was murdered by neighbor but relatives of her lather Thomas John Spears who came ol staunch Orange stock believed relatives or friends of the girls Catholic mother the tormer Eliza Cassidy had stolen the Protes tant child to be raised Catholic Thomas Johns brother threatened to change the spell ing of his surname to repudiate Thomas John for keeping papist wife in such CII cumstances but Thomas John beat him to it switching the to an and standing by his wife Speers doublee it has been in that line ever Since monument to tragedy bigotry and loyalty all at once And greataunt Rachel the irresistible lemme latale Its nice to have had one scamp in the family says Mr Speers They were all so ter ribly wellbehaved Spes
