TORONTO CP Investors who check the Toronto stock market index today may be startled to discover it appar ently Jumped more than five times since the close of 1976 business last week It doesnt mean that 1977 has started with stock market boom What the seeming leap for ward reflects is the newlyde Sighed system of measuring market performance called the ISE 300 begun today by the Toronto Stock Exchange The new index goes into oper Its not market boom its the TSE 300 base level for measuring the movement of stocks of close to 1000 about the same as the Dow Jones industrial average the most closely watched ba rometer of United States stock prices The ISE indicator will move in the range of between 950 and 1050 compared with 170 and 180 under the old system The new range of price levels was chosen to compare With the Dow However the ISE 300 is grouping of 300 stocks while the Dow index is made up of only 30 FOUR INDICES UP For the first time in 43 years the familiar four major indices of the Toronto ex changeindustrials base metals golds and western oilswill disappear from use The ISE 300 has 14 major groups of stocks subdivided in to 43 minor subgroups We will now have an over all measure ot market activity and performance which we did not have before said Berghuis chairman of the com mittee that worked on the new system resent quarter of the total 200 exchange listings but nearly all the stocks where there is substantial trading The main 14 listings under the lSE 300 will be minerals golds oil gas forest con sumer industry building transport pipelines utilities communic which refers to communications and media in dustries such as printing pub lishing and television firms fi nancial and management SOUGHT WIDER SCOPE These 14 major groups were deSigned to present crosssec We have attempted to make the various indexes responsive to the economic factors that move the companies operating profits around said Creet member of the index committee This arrangement and clas sification will provide an in dication to investors of the di versity of issues available in some areas of the economy but we realize it will also show up some areas where publicly traded company shares are lacking For example the old western shares of companies that pro duced and explored for oil and natural gas It did not include the huge in tegrated companies such as Im perial Oil Ltd or Shell Canada Ltd Ihese firms were listed in subgroup called refining OllS However some familiar names Will survive under the new system The golds for example will contain nearly the same issues with the major addition of KerrAddi50h Mines Ltd which had been included in the As well the paper and forest products group will contain all issues of the old sub group of in dustrials SOME SURVIVE Three other subgroupsfood processing steels chemicals and bankssurvive with the same names Other changes include in dustrial mines being integrated mines base metals changing to metal mines and oil refining being called integrated oils The new merchandise group in the top 14 will include stores food stores speciality retailers hotels motels restaurants and wholesale distributors Under the management group will be holding com panics with such varied in terests that they dont fit into any other grouping Among these would be Argus Corp Ltd which controls such enter prises as Dominion Stores Ltd the supermarket chain and MasseyFerguson Ltd the farm equipment manufac ation with an arbitrarilyset stocks EXAMINER TELEPHONES Circulation 726 6539 Clonilied Advertismg 728 24 All
