Barrie Flyers gt in limelight By BILL CURRAN Although followers were disappointed they didnt quite make it all the way and win the Allan cup again Barrie Flyers achievement in reaching the Canadian finals was undoubtedly the 1976 sports highlight in Simcoe County There were other noteworthy features to be sure but to hockey fans anyway the blyers superb effort was outstanding Before losing out to Spokane Jets for the famous hockey trophy the Flyers did capture the OHA senior title and also the Eastern Canada championship Corby Adams then club captain led the rlyers when they defeated Gatineau ordiques three games to one in the Eastern Canadian title series The attacking line of Paul Began Phil Branston and Don Pagnutti also shone along with defence stalwarts Jack Smith and Steve Sly who merited special credit As pomted out before Darryl Slys charges had the disad vantage of havmg to play all four games of the Allan cup finals in Spokane last spring when they went down to to to and to Barries Bob Baird with 34 goals and 44 assists for 78 points was the top pointgetter in the senior OHA last campaign Adams rated among the top half dozen with 23 goals and some 30 assists Gary Lyte also proved himself line sharpshooter in helping Barrie take top spot one point ahead of Thunder Bay IWins Getting more up to date the current Plyers have missed the brilliant playmaking of Corby this season but have played like potential contenders at times with the right breaks and deter mination they Just might make it all the way and regain the Allan cup captured in 1974 11 they could Win the OHA and eastern honors they would have the advantage of homes games in the Canadian championship series MAJORS DOMINATED BASEBALL ACTION Orillia Majors again held the spotlight in county baseball Circles by capturing the championship for the ninth time in the past 13 years For coach Gander Ross who had gmded the Majors to half dozen of those titles and also piloted the Orillia unior
