has always been easy to get one if your family has the money shcsaid For Maria it means weeks Visit to luxury Romc clinic which she thinks cost her fam ily nearly one million lirc aboutSIo0 But abortion is against the law and Italy which went through one political CIISIS brought on by disputes over abortion in the spring now is facing this controversml issue again Parliament is discussing eight bills aimed at making abortion legal and freely available through the health serVicc But the Christian Democrats who now rule through minority govern ment are firmly opposed to any substantial changes in the law first passed by dictator Benito Mussolini in lint Maria thinks new law Will not mean real change Whats the difference she asked The new law Will Just mean that poor women can get abortion too LAWOMILItAIED For young Italian women an unwanted pregnancy is com plicated by Italian civil law which forbids marriage below the agc of 1874 although the church Will permit girl as young as 12 to marry in ex ceptional Circumstances Im not sure would have married Mama said But dont know that wanted to get rid of the baby either Every body elsc seemed to take the deCision for me might have been able to get specuil pcrmissmn to marry But it would have been awful going through the appli cationsltay is very bureau cratic And everybody seemed to think it was easier simply to regard my baby as slight ill ness Maria thinks that free abor tion would put tremendous pressure on women who were single poor or had had several babies already to take the abortion option When France introduced llh eral abortion laws in Novem ber 1973 it gave an impetus to efforts here public opinion poll was taken early in 1974 85 per cent of those questioned said they believed the present laws should be relaxed CAN BE JAILEI At present woman found guilty of having an abortion can be imprisoned for between one and four years and person performing an abortion can be sentenced to up to five years However the constitutional court ruled in February 1914 that laws forbidding abortion were unconstitutional if womans mental or physical health were endangered by con tinumg the pregnancy Dr Federico IAmbrosio who later performed abortions at Milans Mangiagalli clinic said at the time of the court ruling Within short time abortion may legally be per formed in Italy to protect womanshcalth Vital test case finally lor ced the Christian Democrat government to state publicly that it accepted the courts pro abortion ruling At Seveso about 200 women in the first three months of pregnancy heard that the babies they were carrying could turn out to be monsters as result of contamination by the cloud of tox1c dioxm that cs caped from nearby chemical factory Surprismgly only 25 women actually went through With abortion at the Mangiagalli CllnlC But it is it known how many women sought abortions elsewhere away from the glare of public1ty or how many appli cations the Maniagalli reJec ted Women entering the clinic had first to conVince rCSident psychiatrist that their mental health was in danger Elsewhere two leftWing groups the Italian Womens Liberation Movement MLI and the radical Centre for In formation Sterilization and Aobrtion CIGA set up clinics to give contraceptive and abor tion adVIce Apart from the clinics for the rich Marias abortion has long been available in
