10 The Barrie Examiner Wednesday December 29 1976 SPORTS CORNER Better game is expected By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor The 1558 spectators at Mondays exhibition hockey game between Barrie Flyers and the Prague Selects came close to being disappointed The touring Czechoslovakian team had its flight delayed half hour at Halifax and actually missed the connecting flight from Montreal to Toronto its good thing the bus was waiting right at the plane and not at the airport said Jean Marc Lalonde tour direc tor from the Canadian Amateur Hockey Assomation As it was the Selects arrived in Barrie Just after pm anything but rested Thats why Mr Lalonde is expecting better gametonight Selects severely tested Flyers Monday The game was close as the 32 score indicates and the best game by the Flyers at home this season despite the loss lt was one of those games which ended too quickly Any person calling himself fan of hockey would be foolish to pass up the opportunity to watch the Czechs work lts basketball on ice the way that puck floats And speed theyve got plenty of that enough to keep Flyers defence sharp and movmg up to try and choke off the rush before it really got on track lt was different Flyers club than that weve seen of late in the Ontario Hockey Association Senior League Despite their onepoint lead in the RenWick DiVISion theyre as guil ty of slacking off as any club Not so Monday The wingers stormed back as soon as Flyers lost possession of the puck That gave Flyers defence some added protection and helped cool Czechs passing game Expect more of the same tonight from the Flyers Flyers coach Darryl Sly has been on number of clubs which has met overseas teams in exhibition play He led Flyers in close checking game from his pomt posuion on Monday This is something else to watch out for as Flyeis Will be at tempting to cut off the Czechs passmg game by taking man completely out of the play Flyers goalie Ron Patterson played major role In Mon days game for Barrie before beaten by puck which went off Milos Novak in front of the Barrie net for the eventual Winner Selects spent the early portion of the game trying to penetrate the defenSive ring thrown up by Barrie They then started blasting at the Flyers net from the point They throw it around lot Patterson said We ex pected that thats what they did last year Our defence played well Our Wingers were coming back added Patterson They like to feed the guy in the slot all the time but when weve got our centreman standing there tfif screws things up and they have to go back to the point Thats why they were shooting from the pomt all the time They do that then well keep them to three goals aagainst every night Patterson was on the bench as number two man behind Grant Cole last season and could only share moral victory in the 53 Win by Flyers in the first meeting between Barrie and team from Czechoslovakia He had an admirable game Monday and was selected by the media at game as the outstanding Flycr Jagr Jaroslav was the goaltender beaten in the last period by Flyers last year He may be working the tzcchs nct tonight He would dearly like to Wipe out the one defeat which marred Chalupa has also drawn the interest of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League Selects spent most of Tuesday shopping before taking up an offer by Fred Day manager of the Barrie Fitness entrc todropin to use the Centres facilities lonights game is the third for the Selects They have won both games to date starting With 24 Win over the Nova Scotia Voyageurs of the North American Hockey League on Sunday To compare to two games would say the Flyers would have beaten the Voyageurs said Lalonde Larry Belisle tchairman of OHA Senior Hockey League councu and Vicechairman of the Ontario llockcy Assomationi told me the Flyers were going to beat the Czechs Lalondc said he wasnt so poSitive but had second thoughts after seeing the Flyers Wayne Carleton and all GL1ltNIlt may not be big issue to most but its certainly gnawing away at others Its the issue dealing With what has been termed the lack of respect shown by the Flyers at the games One fan said he was embarrassed when Flyers did not take off their helmets for the playing of the national anthem lts common practice elsewhere but one neglected in Barrie This seems to be irkiiig growuig number of people at MILAN llLlP
