NEWS ROUNDUP N0 leads in $500 000 Brinks heist MONTREAL CP Police said they had no leads in con nection with the robbery of $523500 from two Brinks guar ds Tuesday TWo men one of them carry ing rifle wrapped in Christ mas paper took the money from the guards as they were transferring it from branch of the Bank of Montreal to their armored truck at an eastend shopping centre Police said the bandit carry ing the giftwrapped rifle walked up to the guards tore the paper off his weapon and Jabbed it into the ribs of one am Telling the guards to drop their weapons the bandits or dered them to return to the bank then grabbed the bags of oney and ran to waiting car driven by another person Police said the guards were taken completely by surprise by the bandits who they said looked like ordinary Christmas shoppers It was the second time this year that Brinks has been hit by major robbery in the Mon treal area Last March $28 million was stolen from Brinks armored truck outside the Royal Bank of Canada in the financial district in the largest haul in North American history On June police arrested eight persons and said they had recovered about $80000 of the stolen cash However all eight suspects including two sisters and their 60yearold mother were later released for lack of evidence The case remains un solved Police said they saw no link between Tuesdays robbery and the theft last
