MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor Ron Shaver started skatin when he was fiveyearsold because he enjoyed it and ile he admits his goals have changed in 20 years skating still remains fun for one of Canadas topranked amateur male figure skaters Shaver made pair of guest appearances at the Huronia Winter Games Invitational figure skating competition on Sun day He simply awed competitors and spectators alike with his skating mastery For most it was the first time they had seen skater of Shavers calibre actually performing live before their eyes Some could only sit captivated as the lithe 25yearold per formed Others could not stop clapping Both performances were greeted by hearty applause which called the Cambridge Ont native back for encore after encore The excitement Shaver generated at the Barrie Arena was real The crowds werent overwhelmingly large mainly skaters but they expressed their appreciation in the only way they could Its been long time since applause like that has been heard at the Barrie Arena Shaver is expected to emerge from the Canadian champion ships in Calgary in February as Canadas top amateur male figure skater After that hell be looking at the world figure skating cham pionships in Tokyo early in March 1977 with it the chance to erase the agony of last years disappointments kFor brief period last year Shaver considered hanging up his ates He was seventh after the short program of the skating com petition at the Winter Olympics in Innisbruck Austria when forced to pull out because of groin injury The injury was sufficient to kec him out of the world coni petition in Goteborg Sweden whic followed three weeks later Shaver said he was prepared for the Olympic competition when he injured himself during practice session It was the low part of my whole life really didnt want to skate anymore he said Shaver took the blow of missingthe remainder of theOlympic competition and world championships hard It was the second year he had months of work virtually wiped out It was the second year in row that it happened was fore ed out of the national championships year before in Brandon Manitoba was hoping to get back up to compete in the world cham pionships in Sweden went to Sweden and think getting back on the ice convinced me that had something to look forward to Getting back working at it was big incentive to decide it wasnt really the end of the line after all Shaver has been overshadowed over the years by Ioller ransion He was ranked second behind Cranstoii at the Winter Olympics Since ranstons decision to leave the amateur ranks this year more recognition has come Shavers way But he refuses to believe he was ever in ranstons shadow dont believe really was in the shadow of loller Cranston always felt that had my own individual style Shaver says his style is developed more along athletic lines and aloiiglyriamic masculine music His ultimate goal is to win the world championships To get there he has to first qualify at the Central anadian Division through competit ion in luclph in early January This is the first year that the big names in figure skating have had to compete at the divisional level Usually the top skaters got bye but ruling by the Canadian Figure Skating Associar tioii has made it compulsory that all skaters regardless of ranking compete at the divisional level Top three winners in these events then go on to the Cana dians in Calgary This wont be new for Shaver He had to requalify as result of an injury two years ago meaning right through the sectional competition to the nationals He got bye in the sectionals this year but because of the new ruling will he competingat thedivisionals Shaver representing the Hamilton Stoney Creek Skating Club has been working hard in preparation of the Canadian championships and world figure skating competition While his routine varies through the week he starts Mondays at noon with three hours of skating From the rink its straight to health club for weightlifting running and working out on the stationary bike Ballet lessons follow to to in when he breaks for dinner than its back tothe rink at midnight toskateuntil in Shavers said he has adjusted to the routine and that skating in the early morning hours is perhaps one of the best times to train started skating at five because enjoyed it It was more of hobby said Shaver still look at it as hobby still enjoy it wouldnt skate if it wasnt fun Thats really how keep it all in perijctive While Shaver has the goal of winning the world champion ships he said he could live with not winning if gave it too percent If lost then it would be tosomeone better than me Shaver has had only major competition this season and that was the Skate Canada in October where he placed first in the figures short compulsory program and in the long program Neil Carpenter has been working with Shaver for years Both skated together when they were seven or eight years old and trained together under the same coach Carpenter turned pro and went to North Bay and eventually moved back to Kitchener Ron approached me oneday and asked if would coach him was little hesitant it wasqtiitc responsibility to takeon so intone with that much talent he said Carpenter agreed to coach Shaver with the understanding that he would give the talented skater whatever he could while at the same iinc learning from Shaver
