gave that approach up unsatisfactory it was really servmg our need on the ministerial association rather than the need of the person he said Now he learns from hospital staff members who is most in need of visit and schedules himself accordingly Does he meet resistance as clergyman lvc had absolutely no pro blem with that at all he said No one has turned him away because he is minister Mr Pcake notes that he primarily offers personal sup port rather than evangelism in the narrow sense if as has happened perhaps half dozen times the patient asks about the Gospel message Mr Peake will talk to him about it but he does not push it on the unwill iglowevcr he said he deals with religious issues in broader sense of the term since he comes as minister and since the subjects that patients often need to discuss such as faith hope forgiveness guilt and selfacceptance are re ligious in nature Mr Ieakc also deals with families of atients and with hospital sta the latter in what he calls morale manager of the Huronia Tourist Associa tion is writing to the ministry of health asking for more in formation and less publicity about mercury contamination in Lake Simcoe pickerel Mr Robertson said mercury plant life other lakes displayed before they went downhill Earlier this week ministry of health officials recommended an official warning be issued against frequent eating of pickerel from Lake Simcoe due to possible mercury contamina tion warnings have had depressing effects on sport fishing in other areas and until the ministry is prepared to say the level of con tamination here is positively health hazard nothing should be said Lake Simcoe is known as the finest sport fishing area in close the Earth Examinrr ulhe HarrieHxaminer Satprday December 18 1976 Winter recreation deemed acceptable were found in some Lake Siomcoe pickerel during tests earlier this year dont think the mercury contamination in pickerel is go ing to have serious effect on fishing in Lake Simcoe Mr Stewart said publicity proximity to Toronto he said and adverse publicity might hurt that trade Mr Robertson said health of ficials should wait until they have positive reports and the ministry of health is ready to issue warning SPORT FISHING The pickerel population in Lake Simcoe is large but the fish are difficult to catch he said The major sport fishing is for lake trout Whitefish and yellow perch However pickerel is one of the top eating fish he said Pickerel is major tourist at traction in Huronia Mr Stewart added but the attrac tion is watching them spawn on the Talbot River each spring mercury warning was issued about Lake St Clair and people continue to fish in it just for sport Mr Stewart said But he advised the public to take the health ministrys war ning against frequent eating seriously Researchers have zeroedin on mercury in recent years he said but in most cases con tamination could be traced to an industry located near the water Lake Simcoe has no industry that could cause the contamina tion so researchers believe it must be natural occurance he said He suggested it is appearing in pickerel first because that species is large older fish There appears to be correla tion between the size of the fish and the amount of mercury it contains Pickerel are at the top of the food chain meaning they eat smaller fish which also contain mercury Simcoe showing classic signs of degradation And because they are older fish they have been ac cumulating mercury in their systems over longer period of time Mercury is toxic in high con centrations and long exposure to tiny amounts can cause brain and nerve damage and birth defects Health officials have recom mended pregnant women not eat any pickerel Only frequent longterm eating of fish with low mercury levels is viewed as dangerous Dr Jan Muller cheif of en vironmental health studies for the health ministry said more detailed advice about eating fish known to contain mercury will probably be issued soon 600 ITEMS OF CHEER FROM HILLCREST SCHOOL In one week the 475 students at Hillcrest public school col lected just under 600 items for the Barrie and District Christmas Cheer Organiza tion
