by Darryl 10 The Barrie Examiner Saturday December 18 1976 s39 Midland midgets going to Europe By BILL CURRAN While Barrie Orillia and Midland hockey Oldtimers are among older Canadian teams getting tunedup for another European tournament in March Midland Legions young midgets are preparing for an overseas flight right after Christmas Bob Merkely is coach of the Midland club which has been aid ed by various community and Midland area organizations in financial drive for expenses Contributors included the Penetang Little NHL Association which donated $300 The Midland Civitans headed by Mike Tinney presented cheque for $1000 to Mike Abram captain of the midgets and all indica tions are the final effort will raise the necessary money The Midland midgets have been booked to leave the day after Christmas and after days rest in Sweden will start their ames in various cities there including Stockholm and oteborg Besides the captain players slated to make this fine trip which should be memorable event for these youngsters as well as the older officials include Ken LeGrandeur Bob Haats Kevin Denis Fred Wallace Steve Thomson Andy Zurawski Dwayne Storey John Reid Steve Dunn Kelly Larmand and Andy Seemann Pete Abram is going as club trainer and their venture should be followed with interest by area sport fans The Oldtimers which means players of 35 years or more are scheduled to leave about March 10 Instead of Holland where they performed last spring they will be seeing new scenery this time in Switzerland The Canadian Oldtimers hockey Association which has its headquarters in Peterborough is preparing for dozen or more Canadian teams to make the trip Other entries are from Germany Belgium France Holland United States Russia and of course Switzerland itself Barrie players who made the flight to Holland for the 1976 tournament still like to talk about the highlights of not only the games but the scenic tours and other points of interest and uri doubtedly Orillia and Midland players have been doing so too Most of the same personnel are planning to go on the new trip although there will be few changes Barrie Oldtimers won two lost two and tied one in overseas games in Holland last spring Orillia and Midland had very much similar records But Huntsville Black Hawks with former NHLer Dick Duff won five in row to take division championship FORMER RANGER DRILLS WITH RILIIA Coach Blake Uren hopes the current Orillia Oldtimers will be stronger than last seasons team We have just few changes but we are working out more he said in reference to regular drills at the Twin Lakes arena in Orillia The Orillia team lost an early season exhibition game to Bar rie Oldtimers but Uren said several players were missing from the lineup Of course Barrie had some absentees too for that contest Dale Rolfe defence player with New York Rangers last winter has been practising with the Orillia Oldtimers and if hf makes the trip should materially strengthen the teams chances He has been on the injured list but the stickhandling and skating ability flashed in workouts has impressed spec tators SISKINS BATTLE WAY BACK TO TOP After briefly relinquishing top spot to Allistons improved Hornets the Stayner Siskins are back leading the nineclub Central Ontario junior circuit But it is close race with the four main contenders all within few points and there promises to be no lack of excitement for followers of the league with prospects of keen battle right to the tirish 0f the schedule Then there should be more excite ment in the playoffs Leaders of the standing most of the season the Siskins were overtaken by the Hornets temporarily in points when the latter had three more games in hand last week But Rick Gowan and company went out and chalked up three victories in row to move out in front again Gowan who is captain of the club scored three goals himself to spark the Siskins to to triumph over the challenging Bradford Blues in key game Brent Dobson scored two and Mark Hannon the other one for the winners The contest was hardfought with the score tied at 2all at one state of the sc cond The disappointed Blues hope to strengthen their lineup before these teams are scheduled to clash again on Monday Dec 27 They were missing John Benneville and Bill Burkholder for the game and reports from Bradford said they are also interested in talking Larry Maurino to return to the club Latest standing indicates Stayner Bradford Alliston and Bracebridge are all hot contenders with Orangeville Huntsville and Caledon also likely to put up real battle for playoff spots Schomberg and Meaford appear to be outclassed but have put up some interesting games when at their peak The Siskins walloped Schomberg 19 to at home with Brent Dobson and Mel Dupuis bagging four goals each in the slaughter But in recent game at Schomberg the Siskins had to extend themselves to gain to triumph irangeville will be the opposition for the Siskins at the the Alexanders came back in the second period to take over the lead He watched the Flyers tie the game before the period ended then as Bill Burlington broke it open with his two third period goals He could understand being beaten It had happened six times before and would hippen again before the season ended What he couldnt understand was the apathetic approach to senior hockey by the people of Barrie The fans here are stupid he said They really dont know what theyre missing He was talking about overly abundant vacant seats at the Barrie Arena Flyers have been averaging around 3400 fans per game while the Alexanders con tinue to draw well over the thousand mark in this their rookie season in Senior liockcv Flyers have one of the best records in hockey one which other clubs envy Flyers
