Not enough calls says board trustee By LAURIE AC FAYIHCN Journalism Student Georgian College My phone rings but it doesnt ring enough would like to hear more opinions from more people Addressing members of the YMYWCAs Thursday mor ning offee Group Betty Thompson explained tier role as trustee on the Siiiicoe County Board of Education otiering opinions on various issues con cerning todays education systems The school board acts as liaison between the people the administration and the teachers she said We are the policymakers with the help of the administration but we need to get input from the people to communicate ef fectively Mrs Thompson said that along with handling regular daily weekly and monthly business the board members review all policies once year to keep them up to date We want our pupils to have the est education possible she said The biggest task is preparing the yearly budget she said The budget for 1976 is more than $63 million the majority of which is spent on instruction and student services 72 per cent dniinistratioii and computer services plant operations and maintenance pupil trans portation debenture debts and new buildings and art ditions constitute the rest of the expenditures In response to question from the audience concerning proposals to go back to basic subjects Mrs Thompson said she was pleased to hear that core curriculum guides would be established This is not time for ex panding course programs she said but time for retaining basics and upgrading stan dards With the openconcept system established in the late 505 students had too many choices to make she said There are manv things that we as parents take for granted our children know We dont realize lot of things have to be pointed out She said many problems crop up in the area oi specialized education We tend to look only at students with learning handicaps and belowaverage ability virtually ignoring those with bettertitanaverage abilities She explained that in many cases children who are capable of doing work one or two grades ahead of the one they are in are kept behind in their own age group and end up getting bored Mrs Thompson also em phasized the role of parents in relation to their childrens education Few schools have homeandschool meetings any more she said which often makes it difficult for parents to know whats going on larcu is should visit their
