14 The Barrie Examiner Thursday December 1976 By RANDY MCDONALD Examiner Sports Editor coordinating body has been identified as top priority need for future development of recreation in Barrie The Barrie Community Recreation Conference held its second of two sessions Wednesday at the Sunnidale Community Centre with the need for coordination among services resources and plan ning emerging as common denominator It was listed as top priori ty issue by the majority of the 10 individual discussion groups which represented crosssection of the recrea tional services in Barrie The purpose of the con ference was to provide an op portunity for discussion bet ween the various service organizations and concerned individuals in order to iden tify immediate and future recreational needs services and facilities for Barries citizens The conference was split into two sessions with the first held Nov 17 At that ses sion delegates were broken down into 10 small discussion groups and confronted with the task of drawing up list of priority needs to help future recreational develop ment In some cases the list of priority needs was lengthy One group identified 31 areas of concern The delegates were then asked to carefully study the needs and to come up with second list of priorities by the close of Wednesdays ses sion This list would be con densed version listing the top 10 or so priority needs in order of importance The need for second in door pool and third ice sur face ranked high on the list of immediate needs for recrea tion development Other needs identified included better communica tion between services and better use of facilities available Meeting the needs of senior citizens was listed as were bike paths multisports pathsi Band Shell better use of open space and ac tivities for preteens and girls The Barrie Department of Parks and Recreation will meet in the near future with Coordination is seen as recreation need the discussion group leaders to study the priorities of each group From this master guide will be unveiled which the recreation department hopes will list recreation needs of the community in order of importance The various groups were also asked to suggest some possible stumbling blocks to bringing about the realiza tion of the identified needs as well as possible courses of action As the discussion leaders reeled off their top three identified needs near the end of Wednesdays conference session the theme of co ordination continued to sur face Al Hopper executive director of the Barrie YM YWCA and group leader said that making maximum use of facilities available through coordinating body which would develop an overall recreation plan was the top priority of his group Maureen Wilson said the findings of her particular group listed better com munication between all facilities and services now available as top priority need The group leader also listed craft programs for young mothers and athletics for preteens with the em phasis on athletics for pre teen girls We feel that there are quite few athletic things for boys now but that the pre teen girls are left out she said Jack Garner reported on the findings of his group We related more to the ser vices aspect he said We zeroed in on communication and information especially complete crossreference directory in the city of Barrie controlled through parks and recreation which would allow any person with any recrea tion desire in the city to find exactly how where and when We felt this was very im portant he said Mr Garner said his group listed residential participa tion in planning recreation facilities for the future as another need identified by his group Joy MacKenzie regional consultant with the field ser vices branch of the Ministry of Culture and Recreation CoOp trims Orillia to take over top spot said in her closing remarks that she hoped that lot of the interest groups and pro gram areas would make an effort to get together with the resource people which had outlined facilities presently available in the community number of recreational organizations such as the Barrie Library YMYWCA the Barrie Rugby Club Friends of the Firehall and Barrie Minor Baseball were given the chance before the discussion groups to present brief summaries outlining their needs and resources available The regional consultant pointed out that through the presentations of such groups as the Friends of the Firehall and the Barrie Library that the delegates were reminded that recreation is an awful lot more than just sports and physical activities She thought this was something which was stressed in lot of the groups and was encouraging to hear Youre concerned about all groups whether there is an economic barrier which should be removed physical barriers access to buildings persons mental capacity to participate all of these are problems that weve got to cope with and eliminate to plan an effective program she said She also stressed that the most important resource for future development was the delegates themselves think this is really the message we leave with you that its up to you really think youve come forward with plan for action Gary Stoner director of the department of parks and recreation asked for com mitment from the delegates to continue to work towards the accomplishment of the prioirities as identified know its been two long evenings he said in closing We appreciated the input youve given us but again if weve stressed anything hopefully weve stressed that this is the beginning of partnership that we have to doeverythingourselves Mr Stoncr said it has to be community pulling to gether if they were to realize the overcoming of the rec reational needs We cant do it alone he said Lets do it together and
