Churchill hasnt changed too much Which is why residents like hamlt CHURCHILL Despite the new subdivision homes on the west edge of the hamlet hur chill hasnt been one of your Lfaistercliariging communities over the past few decades Im amazed at the few changes thereve been here says Margaret Jackson who with her husband Brian has rim the hamlets general store for the past 33 years Thats why people like it lhe Jacksons are relative newcomers compared to some Churchill residents such as Mary Sloan who has been the hamlets librarian since 1916 Miss Sloan naturally can remember few more changes For example she has seen the community grow to its pre sent size of 200 to 230 residents can remember when it was about she says Miss Sloans roots lie deep iti Churchill ller grandfather James Sloan came to the hamlet from Etobicoke in 1850 and served as the coiniiiunitys first postmaster running the Post Office out of drawer iii store which no loger eXists llis successor was Miss Sloans father Edward From her childhood Miss Sloan can remember when the village ended at the brow of the hill west of Highway it In those days the hamlet had resident doctor 4i blacksmith carriage shop shoemaker an inn and chopping mill all long since disappeared SllLlSlNllNi Still standing are the hainlets two churches An glican and lnited both built in the 1880s the community hall formerly an llrange hall James Sloan was first master and curling club though the present building replaced the old otie in 1927 Then there is the new library opened in 1974 Miss Sloan has seen library membership ONCEMlLlJENlRlC tltAltilllliSl Staffl in ce known as Morrisons or ners raighurst was renamed in 1868 in honor of the first post master John raig who was Sinicoe ounty warden in 1837 according to local records lr raig donated land for the con struction of the first Anglican church in this community in 1844 During the lumber era raighurst was mill centre skyrocket since then from 175 when the new building opened tow today Miss Sloan has noticed sotne changes iii the life of the coin munity since the hamlet began to grow When was child ac tivities except dances were all built around the church she says There was more com munity spirit Residents of the new subdivi sion she says rarely alteiid church and their main tie with the older segment of the com munity is the curling club But everyone seems to get along well she says including the immigrants Europeans Asians and so forth among the newer resident Its very nice to see tthe communityt growing she says For all its recent gains though the hamlet seeinsalxnit to stiffer one loss The Jacksons are looking fora buyer for their store which sells everything from rubber boots to agedon thepremises cheddar cheese and Mrs Jackson susspects the business may end up as an anti due dealership instead of general store ONLY lll No one in the community does all their shopping at the store Mrs Jackson herself goes to Barrie for meat and fresh vegetables btit the corner business is the only place in the hamlet where residents can buy lastrnintute necessities lts convenience store Mrs Jackson says They cant run to Barrie for every loaf of bread they want The way it looks now the may have to run somewhere to Lefroy if not to liarrie for while Its safe bet the hamlet wont be without store forever because population growth is not expected to stop at 23o second phase is planned for the Valley View Estates siih division which will bring it to total of 63 lots and fitrtlier growth is foreseen in the In nisfil lowhsip official plan now awaiting approval from the provincial ministry ot lions ing which will give the hamlet population of Tlltt by the turn of the century The plan designates small amount of additional ttlmlllttr cial land to serve the new in habitaiits and niiinicipal water already installed in the new subdivision is an eventual possibiliiy for older homes as well lllltllllll lilCNIIlt Slllltli lll ltlx The Market
