would benefit the rest of the province He said the province is con cerned about native peoples rights but also believes the Reed project would provide them with an opportunity for economic advancement businessmen free env terprise is here to stay During luncheon address to the Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce Mr Davis said free enterprise system has given Ontario one of the best standards of living in the world He pointed to the sagging economies of Britain and the economic problems in British Columbia as examples of what can happen in state controlled economic system He said he was not going to throw stones at the federal governments economic policies but expressed concern over the publics lack of con fidence in the countrys economic system He warned the businessmen not to be swayed by defeatist attitudes Economist John Kenneth Galbraiths theory that more state controls are needed is wrong Mr Davis said adding that academics and theorists never include the people factor in their economic equations He said his government has no intentions of exercising con trols over small businesses and Would not be capable of running them as well as their owners Mr Davis said he has reserlt vations about the federal gover nments economic policies but businessmen should not sit back and blame the Anti Inflation Board Thats too easy way out He told the businessmen to concentrate on what they can do to stimulate the economy and not sit back on their posteriors and complain Ontario can do more to stimulate economic progress thantheAlBhesaid He said the defeatist trends are partially an attitude of mind that businessmen can turn around He told them not to consider profit dirty word con cluding that Ontarios future depends largely on people willing to go out and take risk in hopes of snowfall Barrie drivers seemed to have been taken aback by the sudden snowfall but not so others throughout the county Both the Barrie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and the Barrie Police depart ment were each called to eight minor mishaps Monday No injuries were reported in any of the 16 incidents The rest of Simcoe County however appears to have ac climated itself well to winter conditions The Elmvale Stayner Alliston Bradford Wasaga and Midland OPP detachments and the lnnisfil Police Department describe their situations as quiet as do area fire depart ments The local Ontario Hydro for ces have had bit of scram bling to do as result of the snowfall Area manager Don Magee said that three cars have struck hydro poles since yesterday bringing hydro ser vice crews to the scene In one instance service was interrupted for seven hours to seven customers in Gilford Monday morning and afternoon as Hydro effected repairs after one of the collisions he said The snowfall has mobilized both the city public works and ministry of transportation and communications forces although neither is rating yet on the scale it wont in mid winter MTC patrol supervisor Davis Arnold said the full winter ser vice when everything is man ned24 hours day will begin Nov 15 The MTC has four plows ser ving the area three on High way 400 one on Highway 90 said Mr Arnold They also salt and sand the road Mr Arnold said the service is actually running at about 50 per cent of its winter capacity Right now its not too bad The temperature is up the salt works well he said City public works su rin tendent Neil Fox said his epar tment is concentrating on the main arteries hills and collec tor routes at this time Theyve been salted lowed and resalted in the last ay he said Public works is not yet into its full winter service Mr Fox said that as conditions warrant it as more snow comes well do more Another new industry to locate in Barrie By PETER DEPOIESTA Examiner Staff Reporter Another new industry is coming to Barrie the third in two months MiamiCarey Ltd division of Jim Walter Corp has pur chased the former Tyler Refrigeration property on Morrow Road by Essa Road The company is consolidating three manufacturing plants now located in Toronto at the Barrie building The transfer will begin this month and is ex ected to be com leted by Fe ruary says Gor on Scowcroft president Mr Scowcroft said in press release an undetermined num ber of the 175 men employed in Toronto will move to Barrie Mayor Dorian Parker said it is expected the plant will em ploy about 300 people when it begins full operation Mayor Parker said the move is another indication that Barrie is able to attract new in dustry even though there is an economic recession in Canada This is the type of industry we need in Barrie job orientated industry she said Mr Scowcroft said the present MiamiCarey plants in Rexdale have total of 120000 square feet of factory space The new Barrie plant has about 147000 square feet with land available for expansion MiamiCarey is Canadian producer of bathroom cabinets fans range hoods cultlured marble vanity tops vanities electric and woodburning fireplaces and fireplace ac cessories Mr Scowcroft said the warehousing operations in Montreal Toronto Winnipeg Calgary and Vancouver will not be affected by the move Two other industries Tandy Electronics Ltd and Jacuzzi Ltd have announced plans to move to Barrie 15 hours Jack Luke business manager for Bell Canada Barrie said contractor at the Bayclub Developments site at Collier and Albert streets accidentally cut the cable He said Bell was not asked to do cable location before the excavation of the apartment building site started Mr Luke said Bell employees crew of seven with vehicles were at the site from about 815 am to 11 pm repairing the cable The contractor he said will be billed for the Work but he would not estimate the cost Called to fire in township The Essa Fire Department was called early this morning to fire at residence on the 10th Line of Essa just south of Highway 90 Firefighter Ross Burwell said that tanker from the Angus hall two vehicles from Thorn ton and department of lands and forest tanker were on the scene At press Ontario Municipal Board hearing into Barries an nexation plication heads into its ninth ay today facing an uncertain future The hearing will sit through Wednesday then adjourn for at least Thursday Remem brance Day and Friday Where it goes after that depends on court ap plication due to be heard in Toronto Monday which if suc cessful would stop the hearing If the court case brought by lnnisfil Township lawyer John Sopinka oes ahead the hearing wil have to be ad journed so Barrie lawyer James McCallum can argue against Mr Sopinkas ap plication But Mr McCallum said Mon day he is uncertain whether Mr Sopinka will in fact go ahead with his ap lication If he does not the hearing will con tinue at least through the end of next week Mr Sopinka was not present at Mondays or this momings session of the hearing Barrie originally applied for annexation of 13500 acres from lnnisfil 4600 from Vespra Township and 2100 acres from Oro Township All three town ships plus Simcoe County coun cil oppose the application Since the hearing began Oct 28 the city has announced it no longer wants the Oro land though the application remains Whole new ball gameseen in area health unit talks An announcement last week by provincial health minister Frank Miller has opened up whole new ball game in con tract negotiations at Simcoe County District Health Unit health board chairman Ross Stephens said today Contract talks involving about 30 fulltime nurses at the unit resumed last month after being stalled since March 12 key issue in the dispute has been the nurses demand for pay parity with hos ital nurses and Mr Miller sai the provin ce is willing to come up with the funds However 25 per cent of any increase in the health boards contract offer will have to come from Simcoe County and the cities of Barrie and Orillia Mr Ste hens said so the point will stil requirenegotiation Mr Stephens said he expects the board to issue an invitation to the nurses for another negotiating session shortly Meanwhile Lilian Fralick president of Local 37 Ontario Nurses Association said today she was encouraged by con versation with Premier William Davis on radio talk show during his visit to Barrie Monday SUPPORTS RILL The premier told her he sup ports private members bill given first reading last month which would provide for com pulsory arbitration of public ealth nurses contract disputes He advised her to talk to loca and provincial politicians about coming up with the funds needed for wage parity Arbitration has also been on the nurses list of demands The board has offered an eightper cent pay hike six per cent in wages and two per cent in benefits and has opposed an arbitration clause on the groun ds that arbitrators unfamiliar with local conditioris might award an
