That is Up With People and that is why lsyearold Debbie Gardner of Gilford spent year with the group Up With People is produc tion promoting upism and optimism It uses music to br ing sunshine to the masses The group was formed in 1965 Today there are 500 men and women between ages 17 and 25 who are broken down in to casts of 50 to 100 The music and dancing is composed by Up With People They are internationally known having performed at the White House The Super Bowl Royal Albert Hall Expo 70 the Munich Olympics and Festivals of Spain It means lot of travel lot of performing loads of ex perienceand quite frankly says Debbie it means putting up with people missed year of school on tour but learned more than ever would have learned in classroom said the Grade 13 student at Bradford District High School Debbie is used to travel She was born in Calgary but has spent little time in Canada Her father who worked with NATO was posted in various countries throughout the world first saw Up With People when they came to the school attended in Brussels Belgium she said Debbie last year paid the $4000 to become fullfledged Up With People member That includes vocal and dancing training in Tucson Ariz for several weeks It meant making the cast her family It meant never sleeping in the same bed more than two days on the average It meant living with 60 different host families for year It demanded physical fitness todo show for two hours without being exhausted And all this meant one big thing You really have to believe in the philosophy of Up With Peo ple to stick with it she said Up With People attempts to bring sunshine to the elderly the handicapped prisons and to general audiences who need ANN LANDERS Veteran opposes Anns comments Dear Ann was irritated by your kind words for the Ameri can Red Cross As veteran of the Second World War who scr ved overseas for three years Id like you to know that the or ganization you praised was no favorite of the men and Women in uniform We had to pay the Red Cross for coffee doughnuts meals and overnight lodging while the Salvation Army supplied coffee doughnuts and meals free So please Ann dont be so generous with your bouquets Toss them only to the worthy and preserve your credibility Joe Of Long Ago Gl llcar Joe blizzard of letters similar to yours hit my desk after that coluriiii appearml wrote lo the top officials of the American Red ross for an explanation and received an cye popping response It wasdocumcnted by copy of lettcrdatcd March 20 1942 from Secretary of War Henry Stimson to Norman ll Davis chairman of the American Red ross llcrcs theinsidc story and pretty it isnt All Engliin and Australian men in uniform had to pay for off base food and lodging because voluntary giving which is characteristic of thc linich Stalcsi is not the pattern in other countries The Red Cross which has never accepted lime from the US gchrnminl and to this day relics totally on voluntary contributions was asked to establish club facilities for US scr viccmcri overseas where troops from all allied forces would bc welcome The Salvation Army lid NOT have this icsimnsibilily The British High ommand then made an official request that servicemen be required to pay for whatever they received just as their men had to pay The Red ross was adamantly opposed to this concept and protested vehemently They lost thc fight however when request came from Secretary Slimsoii llis letter was tantamount to command Allegations have persisted since the Second World War that the Red Cross made profit overseas Nothing could be further from the truth The clubs operated at loss and represented heavy financial burden to the Red Tross Moreover the public image of the Red Cross was badly tarnished when they were forced by Stimson to go along with the British High Command How unfair that this splendid organization has had to take the rap for decision made by the army Today 35 years later the truth is known by only few Dear Aim Somebody goofed or you dont know your Men ningers It was Dr Walter NOT Dr Roy who disagreed with your survey that showed 70 per cent of thc parents in this coun try would people to worry about and ot more people who care lot of people ask what good we do and sometimes its hard to answer says Debbie think if the production made someone feel good for one night then it is doing some good she said Idealistic Phoney hate to hear the word phoney associated with Up With People she said All the cast members have their own personalities We all felt high and low at times Sometimes you dont feel the way you have to appear on stage But you do itbecause you believe in it she shrug ged Were human So that means there is Up With People for the audience and Up With People for themselves There is constant activity Up at am the cast sets up lights and stage rehearses eats rehearses tours the town bit and is in bed by midnight You meet all kinds of peo le she said The cast has to now how to et the audience involved an sometimes that means going into the audience and dancing and talking with them during intermission Superficial DEBBIE GARDNER of Gilford is former Up
