Barrie women their own worst enemies say disappointed city BPW club members Women in Barrie are theii own worst enemies say twc disappointed members of If BusineSs and Professional Womens Club of Barrie There was turnout of nine women Monday night at on suniers Gas for the meeting scheduled by the group to discuss the possibility of the government funding womens resource centre in Toronto We didnt expect large turnout but we expected more than this said Sylvia Stack president The BIW clubs of Ontario were asked by Toronto womens committee two years ago to find building suitable for resource centre and to create the interest among women So far the have found ossible building the etmpolitan Toronto entral library an historic building available by 1977 Under the Ontario Heritage Act it cannot be demolished or passed into private hands it has to be used publicly We have to convince the government that if they con tinued funding the building as womens resource centre it Would be wellused Mrs Stack said This means creating interest among women and getting them to write their MIIs One problem is Women dont know what womens resource centre is and how it can be used Mrs Stack said The centre will be similar to library about and for women Women artists poets craf workers and playwrights can promote their own talents Womens groups can use it for seminars workshops and training courses Not only could the building be used for shownndtell but it would be concentrated library of anythingyouwanttoltknow aboutwomen in history Often times the topic will come up what about women in literature but where do you go to find it said Connie Johnston member The centre could be focal point of contact for schools and the individual who wants the iii formation Mrs Johnston sees two myths that must be dispelled We are not just another womens club interested in drinking coffee and tea she said of the BPW and were not libbers in any sense of the word But we do feel there is much to be done in equalizing rights for women This thrust for womens recognition is not threat to men she asserted For this reason she said resource centre would have tremendous possibilities What now think well continue trying to get women interested by PEOPLE PLACES MENETTES BOUTIQUE The Barrie YS Menettes will hold boutique at Collier Street United Church Hall Saturda from 1230 to pm The clu
