I2The Barrie Examiner By ROSS MILNE MP Peel Dufferin Simcoe The government is preparing to establish collective bargaining information centre The purpose of the centre will be to provide information to labor and to management on the ability of the economy to support the demands being placed on it and on the com petitive situation of their par ticular industrial sector think this is good idea In my address during the Throne speech debate urged the government to expand the role of the information centre to provide each industrial sector with basic information on its productivity We have some real problems in our economy and many of them could be solved by at taching more improtance to productivity The work produc tivity does not seem to have captured the interest or atten tion of organized labor or management As listen to various groups talk about it management seems to be say ing only that we should have lower wage scale in Canada and labor seems to be saying that it should have large share of the national economy tllLll SATISFY BOTH It seems to me that the aims of both could be realized by serioiisl striving for greater prodiictiVIt That is what is needed for us to effective bargaining Perhaps the benefits of increased produc tivity could be shared between employees and employer and not as in the past go only to the latter hope the new information centre will address itself to Stevens raps Trudeau speech about controls Prime Minister Trudeaus defence of his governments wage and price control pro gram was criticized by Sinclair tevens MP for YorkSimcoe is message to riding consti tuents It is difficult for him to claim any victory without twisting cost of living figures wee bit said Mr Stevens in referring to Mr Trudeaus throne speech Our consumer price index is made up of many items but the largest category about 30 per cent is food said Mr Stevens Food prices at the farm gate are not controlled yet that is were there has been the sharpest drop in prices The beef farmer has been hit the hardest over the past year with cattle prices falling 20 per cent Many such farmers have al ready gone out of business More may follow For the first time in many years the cattle population has fallen as beef men send more and more animals to be slaughtered pointed out the Conservative member This coupled with the im portation of cheap Austrialian and New Zealand carcasses has resulted in beef prices dropping dramatically so that the overall food price index has declined This is the main reason why the Consumer Price Index is down commented Mr Ste vens Not the Trudeau anti inflation program It is Cana ldian farmers who are taking the beating while Mr Trudeau tries to take the credit labor and the lack of lhope they will see where
