Monday July l2 I976 New federal program to help improve beef UIlAA Agriculture Minister Eugene Whelan today announced an expansion of the federalprovincial Record of Ierforiiuince tlttlli for beef cattle program through new young sire proving program The aitu of this new pro gram is to improve efficiency in the production of beef by in creasing the availability of ex tensiver tested genetically sii ierior beef bulls This kind of seecting testing and proving beef bulls will benefit the entire cattle industry Mr Whelan said The new rograin will be an extension oI the existing ROP program and federal support will be available for two phases In one phase station testing of preselected young bulls the federal government will pay $50 to the testing agency for cacti topranking or promising young bull consigned This will defray part of the owners costs of the program and encourage more breeders to submit their best young sires to further testing Topranking bulls are those that have ranked in the top onethird of their herds in recognized testing program in the second phase outstan ding hometested bulls bulls in the top 10 er cent of the station tests an other bulls which show promise will be eligible to receive federal assistance for progeny testing The federal government will pay to the owner of the sire half the cost of testing the progeny of the sire The number of rogeny and the number of herds in which the progeny are raised are critical to obtaining an accurate proof of thesire No payment will be made if the combination of herds and progeny are insufficient for an accurate proof When there are sufficient progeny and herds the assistance payable will be $750 provided the cost of testing the sire has been $1500 or higher This program is an improve ment of an existing program and it will better serve the in dustry while new sire monitoring program is put in place This latter program is receiving increasing attention within the purebred and com mercial sectors of the beef in dustry and within few years will be established to degree winch will allow termination of the foregoing monetary assistance DATE TIME The new young sire proving program is available to any qualified producer or organiza tioii tip to 100 progenytested bulls and up to 2500 station tested bulls may qualify this year The rograni will CillipIO mcnt tie various provincial
