wont knock on doors Bahais have religious message they would like to share with you but they wont come knocking on your door to deliver it Were forbidden to pro selytize Ed Muttart one of nine members of the national spiritual assembly which governs the 132yearltold faiths affairs in Canada ex plained during visit to Bar rie We will gladly share the message with anyone who in quires but they must initiate ithesaid The Bahai faith began in Persia in 1844 with the reaching of the Bab orerunner of the faiths chief prophet Bahaullah The Bab was martyred for his preaching and Bahaullah whose name not the one he was given at birth means glory of God spent much of his life in prison Since Bahaullahs death the faith has been governed successively by his son and reatvgrandson and since the eatli of the latter in 1957 by the voluminous writings he left behind An international assembly of nine the Univer sal House of Justice was set up in 1963 according tp prescriptions laid down by Bahaullah to govern the faiths worldwide affairs There are more than 10000 Bahais in Canada including dozen in Barrie and 180 local assemblies but the na tional assemblys target is to increase the latter figure to 300 within year KIZY FIIATlRIiZ Key feature of the Bahai There were 15 com petitors in the Cygnus sailboat race this weekend at Hawkestone Yacht tlub from as far away as Mon treal and Ottawa But iocal crew won two of tour races and captured the championship trophy l1 faith is its acceptance of all the worlds great religious teachers as manifestations of God and as part of the pro gressive revelation of the one true religion Bahais believe in only one God says Mr Muttart and from that it follows that there is only one religion Gods religion Weve got ourselves into trouble because some of us accept some and reject others says Mr Muttart of the worlds profusion of religions and sects He notes however that Bahais reect the Christian understan ing of Christ as God Himself in the fullest sense born as man an understanding regarded as essential by virtually all Christian theologians whether Protestant of Catholic Mr Muttart former United Church adherent says Bahais do not believe that the limitations implicit in being human like Christ are compatible with the infinite natureofGod The faith also stresses the elimination of racial or na tional prejudice Theres on ly one race and thats the human race Mr Muttart says OBLIGATIONS Daily rayer study of Bahaulla writings he left more than 100 books sharing the faith and fighting spiritual battles and tempta tions rather than running away from them are also among obligations accepted by Bahais Adherents of the faith must fast from sunrise to sunset each year from March through 21 unless pregnant or in other exceptional cir cumstances and must abs tain from alcohol hal lucenogenic drugs and all forms of backbiting Another requirement is that though Bahais are to find their own marriage part ners rather than enter prear ranged marriages no Bahai may marry if his parents for bid it regardless of their reason or of his own age Bahais also believe that war will be abolished by the end of the current century ushering in what is called the lesser peace The most great peace or golden age of mankind will follow generations or centuries later they believe CITY NE WS The barrio ExominerMondoyJuly
