with its exemptions There is enor mous room for speculation hesaid Also the Ontario govern ments rent control program is disastrous and will result in higher house prices for reasons too numerous to pro posed rental rates for the Barrie Arena next season The Flyers want to operate booster club but need ma jor reduction in rates to pay for renovations to second floor committee room at the arena City council listened to presentation by the Flyers and then sent the proposal back to the public works com mittee for further study Steve Cripps Flyers general manager asked council to approve rental rate of $300 game for the team during the regular season and playoffs Now the Flyers have to pay $350 for regular season games and $575 for playoff games Mr Cripps said the team is willing to spend about $15000 for the renovation of the se cond floor for the use of Flyers Booster Club The booster club he said might attract more fans to the games and make the team financially stable The Flyers are very pleased with the stage one renovations to the arena but it has not really helped bring in fans he said Mr Cripps said most of the teams in the Senior league have booster clubs to help support the team The team he said is also not interested in exclusive use of the booster club room Mr Cri ps said the Flyers would lie to use the room rentfree for the three year period With 16 regular season games an average of seven playoffs and $100 game savings for the booster room the team could save $5025 year about $15075 which is enough to pay for the renovations to the second floor The only other alternative is to have the city pay the $15000 for the renovations he said The team will be more than happy to pay its fair share of arena rentals then Mr Cripps said last year the team paid about $16000 for arena rental which averages to about $50 an hour Other groups he said pay about $35 an hour to use thefacilities Were putting up the capital for the three years is often debris in the water as well as broken glass which people can not see The city staff spends about 15 man hours week clean ing the pools he said which do not have water re circulating system or au system and for that we should receive free use of the facili ty he said referring to the booster club room Other groups should pay rental for it Whatever money we re ceive from the rental will be put back into the room He said the city and the Flyers will split the rental rate for the room 5050 After three years well pay the same rate for the room as anyone else he said booster club was started last year but was not as suc cessful as hoped because of tomatic water chlorination the lack of meeting facilities at the arena Mr Cripps said the club would like to have the room ready for September The public works commiti tee had recommended ap proval of the Flyers plans for the second floor room sub ject to number of condi tions certified cheque or bank letter from the Flyers for 100 per cent of the contract for the renovations plus 10 per cent contingency fund was one of the conditions before contract is approved Residence rents rise for RVH student nurses Rents at Royal Victoria Hospitals residences for stu and if the request was denied mon ey to operate the residences would have to come from the health part of its budget Following three hour hearing with the residents the rent review office handed down its decision which reduced the asked for in creases by $1 week Mr Long described this reducation as practically negligible for the tenants Nevertheless the hospital compiled with the rent review boards decision and rolled back rents and reimbursed tenants the extra rent they had been paying since the fall he said Because the lost revenue would result in $5000 to $6000 deficit in operating costs the hospital was con sidering appealing the deci sion he said There were grounds for appeal Mr Long said But two weeks after the hearing the Ontario govem ment amended its rent re view legislation exempting hospital residences from the guidelines Consequently the hospital is raising rents back to what they were last fall about 23 per cent raise 25000 to 30000 directory changes Out
