and the relative strengths and weaknesses of our economy 0f major concern is Can adas competitive position in the export market Much of the rosperity we have en joy over the past decade has been result of the ex panding export markets to which we have sold goods Of course the United States has ur ar est customer DISTRICT NE WS 2The Barrie Examiner Saturday June l9 l976 But lately our exports to the lar US market have declin That is the source of much of the difficulty our economy faces today The recession experienced by the US was much more severe than what we knew in Canada As result the US simply bought less This situation was major factor in the increasing rate of unemployment in Canada and it had an effect in our local area since several in dustries were forced to lay off workers because of lack of export orders LOSING EDGE But over the long term our economy will not fully recover unless we come to grips with the fact that Canada is losing its com petitive edge with the US The average labor cost per unit of output is just about equal between the two coun tries This underlines the need for all sectors of the economy to work in concern toward controlling inflation Otherwise our competitive edge will slip away entirely Its easy to point the finger as so many people do at large powerful unions as the scapegoat But the truth is that all of us are responsible Take for instance the profit picture of large corporations Generally its been healthy over the last few years and as result the aggressive sales effort geared towards pro moting exports has slack ened The employer as well as the employee must work hard to protect our position Fortunately the anti inflation guidelines are show ing signs of success Inflation has dropped about per cent in the last Year and it is realistic to expect it to retreat to about per cent by the end of the year Just the other day received letter from small businessman who said his company is forced to keep price increases within the guidelines although they do not all directly under the AIBs scrutiny because large customers were demanding that price increases be validated BETTER IN CANADA comparison of our infla tion rate with other countries points to how well Canadas economy is faring relative to the international scene In the US it is 92 per cent in West Germany it is 58 per cent in France it is 118 per cent and in Britain it is 215 per cent While unemployment is higher than anyone Would like it to be the economy has managed to absorb more new workers into the work force than most other countries In summary Canadas economy compares well with the major industrial coun tries in terms of controlling inflation economic growth and job creation But the number of man days lost through work 0998 con tinues to be too As result our productivitiy is suffering hope in the months ahead that business labor and overnment will combine orces to make serious ef fort at improving our economic productivity and com itiveness in the export in ct What policies do you think we should tke in shap ing the future direction of our economy GLIMPSES CANOE RACE ANGUS The annual Not tawasaga River canoe race
