IOThe Barrie Examiner Saturday June 19 1976 COUNTY SPORTS Plate winner from Barrie By BILL CURRAN With the popularity of Barrie Raceway reaching new heights sulky racing has been receiving prime attention from horse racing enthusiasts of this area But there also continues to be interest in the principal giloioughbred stakes particularly events like the Queens There will be no Barrie entries in the 117th running of Canadas oldest and best known horse race which is to be held at Woodbine track next Saturday June 26 But review of the colorful history of the plate event shows Barrie once had prominent lace The race itself was held on track which would now go within Barrie boun daries away back in 1873 the 14th running of the competi tion Pringles Mignonette captured the winning trophy and prize money for his Hamilton stable Four entries from Barrie have been Queens late win ners through the years the first in 1903 the recor shows horse named Thessalon from the Brookdale stable of Nathaniel Dyment was the winner at the old Toronto Wood bine track that eventful year for Barries first Another en try from the same stable named Nesto was second The Nathaniel Dyment silks were carried to victory in the plate again the following year when colt named Sapper crossed the finish line in front at the same track The date was May 21 1904 HERENDESY ROMPS T0 EASY VICTORY Although the same stable made different entries in fur ther tries it was not until 17 years later when Barrie horse owned by Nathaniels sons Albert and Simon Dyment regained the honors Accounts of the 1921 event report Herendesy won the Kings Guineas in romp before 25000 fans at Woodbine In 1922 another Dyment entry named Paddle just missed by nose to winner South Shore Others came close but there wasnt Barrie bred horse to take the honors again until 1939 In the meantime William Wright had taken over the Dyment racing property Allbgrt Dyment had become president of the Ontario Jockey horse named Archworth which had been bred and trained here by the Wright stable captured the 1939 classic for publisher George McCulIagh The late Bert Guest of Oro Station fashioned special shoes for the plate winner that year story which was frequently told by the onetime president of the Oro fall fair executive King George VI who was then the reigning monarch was present at Woodbine to see Archworth win to make it par ticularly noteworthy an occasion GOMEZ LEADING PLATE JOCKEY Further records of plate winners over the years show that current jockey Avelino Gomez has ridden the most win ners four in onesixteenth test at Woodbine with Jeff Fell the rider Norcliffe finished six lengths ahead of Hook and Draw CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF AT BONAIRE Club championship play in the mens ladies and junior divisions are all scheduled to start at Medontes Bonaire golf course on Sunday July Bert Yule committee chairman said there will be match play with elimination rounds The finals in each competi tion will be under match play rules with no handica consolation for men will be arranged for losers of the first round There also will be other events for players in different classes Roy Copeland will be defending the mens championship he won last year with Lorne Hocaiuk the 1975 consolation champion competing again Sue Peterson is the defending ladys champion and Bob Thompson is back trying to repeat Creemore this evening In tomorrows action Barrie Red Sox will be travelling to Midland for an evening contest slated to start at 730 while Newmarket plays an afternoon game at Orillia Creemore Braves will visit Tottenham to take on the Bears while Alliston Canucks play at Beeton in other after noon contests There are no games scheduled for Monday but on Tuesday evening Creemore goes to Beeton
