the bottom of the inning the score reverted back to the end of the fifth and 40 triumph for the Twins The umpires decision after two delays totalling 94 minutes sent manager Ralph Houk into shirtthrowing rage in the De troit clubhouse dont want to talk to any censored body he ranted Go talk to the censored umpires Theyre the ones that censored up the game Ive played in much worse censored weather than this many censored times before Im going to report those censored umpires to the censored league Ive already gone in and told those cen soreds myself cant blame him Neude cker stability and no permanence said he had no alternative but to sell three of his star ballplayers because he couldnt make trade for them Finley appeared with repre sentatives of New York Yan kees Boston Red Sox and layer union head Marvin Mil rer at hearing with commis sioner Bowie Kuhn on Thurs day and said the current sys tem of playermanagement be havior is wrecking the sport In matter of hours Tuesday Finley sold Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers to Boston Red Sox for $1 million each then sent left hander Vida Blue to the Yan kees for $15 million after sign ing the pitcher to threeyear contract Kuhn prohibiting the purchased players from report ing to their new clubs had or dered the hearing because of questions that arose in his mind over Finleys clearance sale The issue is whether the as signment of the three contracts is appropriate or not under the No decision yet on coach despite reports Sheros set MONTREAL CP Sam Pollock general manager of Canadas entry in this falls Canada Cup international hockey tournament said Thursday no decision has been made on the Canadian coach Pollock was commenting on Stockholm report that Fred Shero coach of Phil adelphia Flyers of the Na tional Hockey League had agreed to take the job have never spoken to him about the possibility Pollock said in statement Alan Eagleson executive director of the tournament was requested by me to Con tact certain coaches Mr Eagleson advised me that he spoke to Shero and Shero ad vised him that he was avail able However Pollock said Eagleson told Shero he plan to get in touch with other coaches and Eagleson was to report back to Pollock Other coaches apparently in the running are Bobby Kromm coach of Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association Al MacNeil coach and general manager of Nova Scotia Voy ageurs of the American Hoc key League and Don Cherry coach of the NHLs Boston Bruins Eagleson said he had spo ken to Shero last Wednesday and he told me he was in terested but had several com mitments that might prevent him from coaching Eagleson then aproached Sheros agent in Philadelphia and the agent said he thought Shero would not be available The agent said Thursday that Shero was still interested in thejob have advised his agent that will talk to Mr Pollock and inform him of Sheros in tention Eagleson said WINS ASCOT CUP ASCOT England Reuter Frenchtrained Sagaro under English jockey Lester Piggott won the Ascot Gold Cup over 2V2 miles for the second succes sive year Thursday Sagaro be came only the second horse sin ce the Second World War to capture the race two years run ning For Piggott it was his sev enth triumph in the race The victory was worth about $38000 to SagarOs owner Oldham circumstances Kuhn said Thats the issue have to wrestle with have to consider these transactions in the best interest of baseball have the inherent wer to do whatIfeel is in the st interest of baseball WILL DECIDE TODAY His decision regarding Fin leys action was expected some time today Clubs dont want unsigned ballplayers Finley said after Thursdays hearing referring to the fact that the three athletes sold were among seven Oakland players who had not signed contracts for the current season didnt want to sell them We had made every effort for two months to make tradesto no avail We were trying to make trades but when we got to within six hours of the trading deadline we had no alternative but to sell the athletes Kuhn apparently wanted to be made sure of that and called the hearing Though neither would comment on what had transpired in the 90minute ses sion Finley explained He wanted to know the reasons sold and they bought Finley made it clear he felt he was right in making the deals and that frankly think he Kuhn was satisfied with the information we presented him Then he attacked the system which he charged keeps OWners in the dark about players plans for the future Let them all become free agents Finley said angrily at news conference in cram room at the baseball of fices Take Catfish Hunter he said of the righthander who became the sports first free agent through an arbitrators decision in 1974 Now Catfish is the only free agent little fisha cat fishin big pond And hes got 24 owners out there with fishing poles Youve got one little fish swimming around sniffing one bait then another until he smells them all and bites the one he wants Hes got the op portunity of having 24 fish ermen after him But you take three or four hundred ballplayers and theres still just 24 fishermen now lets see how fast they get that bait My thought is this any suc cessful business or industry or sport must have stability If theres no stability theres no permanence and theres no way youre going to have stabil ity if you dont know from one day to the next whos going to be on your club and who iSnt GRANDVIEW FORD Welcomes ARCH BROWN AND HIS CANADIAN TIRE STAFF to Bayfield St and wishes them every success in their newlocation SUPER SA VEV GS on
