retail outlet north of Toronto for CAS by end of the year By SHEILA McGOVERN Examiner Staff Reporter Representatives of the Sim coe County Childrens Aid Society want to meet face to face with James Taylor minister of community and social services to tell him how bad finances are In the provincial govern ments fiscal restraint policey Childrens Aid Societies were restricted to 55 per cent growth and the Simcoe County society is an ticipating $45000 deficit at the end of the year Alex Bolechowsky presi dent of the society said near ly $40000 of the deficit will be in direct child care expenses particularly maintaining diffcult children in outside in stitutions The society has reduced the number of children in outside institutions to nine or 10 but Case aids finish work Four case aids hired by the Childrens Aid Society through Local Initiatives Program will complete their eightvmonth work period this month Tuesday night Dave Gor don social worker told society directors the pro gram which received an $18000 grant has been suc cessful and if money be comes available it should be continued The case aids screened 11000 old files at the society pre ared some files for mi croilming and assisted the regular staff pays an average of $35 day to maintain these children The society also reduced its clerical staff by one and half people and cut its home finding staff to three people from four to keep within the restraints Bill Barnett the personnel chairman of committee of Al liston will assume the vice presidency of the Simcoe County Childrens Aid JEAN GRADWELL Society replacing Rev Ken Purdon of Barrie who has been transferred to Toronto Mrs Gradwell has been member of the societys board of directors for four years and is secretary of the board of directors She will assume both positions to the end of the mm and will then be first in line for the presidency said the reduction in the homefinding staff proved too great strain on remaining members and has lead to fur ther reductions in size with one member off at one time or another suffering from health problems associated with tension and overwork Tuesday night the board of directors agreed to hire an additional staff member to ease the situation but this will add another $6000 half years salary to the societys deficit RESTRICTED The society has restricted its intake of new cases to children who appear to be in immediate physical or dis cernible emotional danger but social workers are still faced with heavy caseloads of which 50 per cent are teen agers Rev Ken Purdon vice president of the society said the province has promised that no child will suffer as the result of restraints and there is slim possibility the minister will be sympathetic He added however that the minister often contradicts himself He is classic example of what the Indians used to call the man who speaks with forked tongue he said Dr Bolechowsky said the society will prepare sup plementary budget to be cir culated to the ministry and municipalities within the area to make the societys posit ion known The society will then try to arrange meeting with Mr Taylor The society is currently rating under budget of out $12 More than 1000 guests friends and business col leagues attended the gala opening of the multimillion dollar store in the completely renovated former Sayvette store in the Hayfield Mall Mr Brown said he heard Mr ooke owner of the Los Angeles Kings hockey team when he visited Barrie several years ago and was struck by his tenacity and will to succeed When Sayvctte opened knew the way they had mer chandised the store they were going to fail Mr Brown said set target wanted the biggest store north of Toronto wanted that store and today we have it Thank you Jack Kent ooke The threclevel store take the bows Mr Brown said he came by his merchants talent honest ly His grandfather on his mothers side pioneered the tea and coffee business in British Columbia and his other grandfather opened health nurses plan to spend today at Queen Park and Monday at their jobs Lilian Fralick president of Ontario Nurses Association Local 37 said Tuesday She said nurses here have no intention of extending their strike beyond the cur rent week despite published statements by union leaders in Toronto that the province widc strike might vary in length from one to another of the 25 health units involved We plan to go back to work Monday she said The 30 fulltime nurses from the Simcoe County District Ilealth Unit plus parttimers went on strike Monday along with their counterparts across the pro vince to back demands for bindin arbitration of con tract iSputes and in support of nurses elsewhere who have been locked out by their health boards Today 1100 striking nurses including good percen tage of the Simcoe County contingent will be picketing Queens Park while union leaders meet with provincial health ministry officials Mrs Fralick said She said local nurses have collected more than 300 signatures in the Barrie and Orillia areas in the past two days on petition calling for uninterrupted preventive health care compulsory ar bitration and expenditure of more than the current tWo per cent of the provincial health care budget on prevenu tive care such as that pro vided by nurses at health units She said nurses spent Mon day in Barrie and Midhurst and Tuesday in Orillia 197615 Church claims credit for patients transfer PENETANGUISHENE The Church of Scientology is claiming credit for the transfer of patient from the maximum security division of the Mental Health Centre inPenetan ishene But me ical director Dr Barry Boyd said today the transfer was routine Dr Boyd said Anthony Visconti 24 has been sent to the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital because he is no longer considered dangerous Last week the church asked the Supreme Court of Ontario to order the release of Mr Visconti and Henry Kowalski 24 No hearing has been ar ranged Scientolo ist Bob Dobson Smith sai he was very pleased about Mr Viscontis transfer to hospital nearer his Toronto home He said Penetanguishene officials did not want to face the Supreme Court over detention of Mr Visconti We only hope now that he obtains the kind of medical attention at Whitby he should have had in the first place Mr DobsonSmith said The Church of Scientology will pursue the case for Mr Kowalski Basically patients dont have enough knowledge of the recourses open to them or they dont have someone who will represent them Mr DobsonSmith said In February the church ar ranged hearings with the On tario Board of Review for the tw0 patients But the board ruled that each man suffered from mental disorder of nature of degree so as to require hos pitalization in the interest of his own safety or the safety of in Guthrie area poletop fire cut hydro electric power to Guthrie and Crown Hill for nearly three hours this morning The fire on 44000 Volt line near Highway 93 also caused short outages in Midhurst Painswick and the Georgian Mall said Ted Johnston Ontario Hydro public relations officer He said the fire was caused by buildup of dust and debris on the insulators of the pole When few drops of rain hit the insulator he said it can cause shortcircuit He said hydro crews iso lated the line with the short and managed to return power to most communities within eight minutes However power could not be su lied to Guthrie and Crown Hil un til the line was repaired Alliston calls tenders for repairs to town arena ALLISTON Town council has called tenders to repair the Alliston arena at an estimated cost of $10000 The repairs will bring the arena up to the standard of the National Buildin Code and prevent closure the Ontario government Earlier this year the ministry of labor ordered repairs to about 20 arenas because they had low snowload capacity There is an overload on Some truss members and floor joists need strengthen ing on ineer Maitland Spencer to Alliston council Otherwise he said the arena is in excellent condi tion throughout The arena was built in 1949 and an addition was made in 1971 Council had no alternative but to arrange repairs and avoid closure Coun Doug Taylor said We are for tunate in the cost compared to other municipalities Counc Aiden Whelan ques tioned the building codes standard of 65 pounds per square foot snowload capaci ty noting that little snow stays
