featured some of the top riders in the province and had sidecars as an added attraction The organizing body behind motocross racing is the Canadian Motorcycl ing Association ltMAI Motocross very demanding sport physically is run over course which includes hills gullies sandwashes and in the rain niiid Any one class is usually run in two heats or molos with final position decided by finishes in each event There can be as many as thl riders in any given race and Sunday saw lot of what is known as firstturn madness The course in Vespra had downhill start followed by hill about 70 feet Iiiin with ltlfoot wide left turn at the top The start of each race was mad dash for the top of the hill since the last to riders usually ended up halfway to the crest with their bikes buried in sand to the axles Ilie riders in general liked the course although most wished it hadnt been so dusty Dust was major problem in passing slower riders they said because their vision was obscured more as they got closer ne group of riders who didnt like the course were those in the siderears The sidehacks as they are called are not part of the rcular MA competition and were brought to attract an ant icnce and try out the idea of running them regularly THUSANIH The course was too sandy for them and their extra weight slowed them down In the first sidecar moto the large hill near the start was cut out but hill in the back section of the course proved to be the bane for most teams Although not particularly steep the hill was sandy and had it turn at the bottom which precluded speedy ap proach nc teams had little difficulty reaching the top Rick Myers may have preferred the former version of the track After being repeatedly urged by driver Allen Adams to lean out more the Indiana passenger bounced out of the Norton powered back as it gained speed at the bottom ofthehill Adams didnt notice his passengers absence until he got to the top of the hill Meanwhile Myers who was oiin bat tered little had run after the hack until Adams turned around to pick him up It didnt really matter since the team was In second last place at the time For the rest of the inoto Myers displayed mraked reiuctaiice to obey Adanis commands to lean out One of the sidecar drivers said he didnt know of any track which would satisfy both side car and motocross riders He said the sidehacks perform best on hard packed track which rnotocrossers dont like since it decreases the importance of the rider and stresses the power of the motorcycle lIll It may be while before topclass motocross action returns to Harrie There was some friction between local organizers and MA and Molsons officials mostly over the condition of the track Ilecause of the type of soil it deteriorated as the day woreon Some felt the weather was fair bit to blame To go With the dryness Sunday there was no significant rain for the week before Even days rain in the middle of the week would have madethetrack more solid KIMBER WORKS
