gtvrIrd l2The Barrie Examiner Tuesdo June l5 1976 We Sports Council seeks strength By RANDY McDONALl Examiner Sports Editor From time to time the doings of the Greater Huronia Sports Council GHSC worked itself into public attention mainly through its promotion and support of numerous projects Its Regional Winter Games last great pride is the success of the Central Ontario December The Games did much to boost the status of multisport body in Huronia Dont be too surprised if similar venture is undertaken this wmter Already the rumblings of another regional Games have been heard Of late the GHSC has been fighting for its collective life At recent meeting between representatives of the dif ferent sport bodies in Huronia gathered at Georgian Col lege to hear and discuss the virtues and problems of Huronia Sportplan heard plea for help from executive director of the Council Bob Baker While the main function of wellattended meeting when compared to the last one called to discuss Sportplan was the introduction of local adaptation of proposed province wide Sportplan which would greatly change the structure of sport as known today an equally important function was to solicit support for the GHSC We nee broader supportreally need it said Baker who added he couldnt stress the point enough In reality the Council is paying the price of jum ing in sw inging before the gloves were laced in place Council virtually ignored or let slide the building up of strong working body in its zealous approach to motivating sports in Huronia The sup Council relied heavily upo port was there when needed but until lately the the work of few dedicated volunteers and one ulltime staff had the opportunity of becoming involved with the Coun cil during the Winter Games time when askedindicating Few refused to give up their that the interest was there Its just that tying people down to definite commitment of support that the slow process of building up working body came to light The Council just completed its first fiscal year of opera tion but as Baker said were still in our embryo stage The council did away with the formalities 0i true elec tion of officers by virtually appointing threetwo men and womanto take over the reins as an interim executive for sixmonth term Barry Hatcher Orillia is president with Bill Trotter Col lingwood and Barries Arlene Crozier serving as officers atIarge Prior to his acceptance as president Hatcher told the gathering that he would like to see strong council making decisions instead of small Ontario Sportplan group is still in its talking stage Its good that the Huronia is taking the initiative in using the basic format to adapt the best possible plan for sport in Huronia however what is more important is the concentration of building strong Council That is the first step the only step which can be taken It would be shame if Abby Hoffman failed to make the Olympic grade this season Few athletes have worked as hard both on and off the track as Hoffman has this season Sunday at the Olympic trials in Montreal Hoffman finished second behind another Toronto runner Yvonne Saunders in the womens 800 metres Saunders just beat out Hoffman in time of 20595 and its now up decide if Hoffman makes the pics to the Canadian Olympic Association COA to Canadian team to the Olym Hoffman twotime Olympian expressed her con fidence that she will make the team Hoffman will be in Barrie Wednesday the guest speaker at the special meeting for women in sport and recreation The meeting is jointly sponsored by the GHSC and the city recreation department Hoffman is no newcmmer to speaking out at meetings as she has been busy in her role as representative of the athletes ah the COA It is hope women and girls in Huronia sport and recreation The meeting takes place at beginning at730pm that Hoffman may help motivate interest by to become more involved in Sunnidalc Community Centre CORNER IEitSRoger Green of
