Barrie Chamber of Commerce ap proved today statement on housing policy calling on city council to investigate land banking encourage the pro vincial Assisted Home Own ership Program AHOP and rental housing and ex amine its plannin and engineering standar and development approval pro cedures with view to pro mote affordable housing for all Barrie residents But the Chambers board of directors backed way from proposal by the Chambers civic affairs committee call ing on the city to develop policy on land banking The statement took the form of review by the civic affairs committee of last months housing policy state ment pre ared by the citys housinga visory committee The civic affairs commitee criticized the housing com mittee for having neglected the private sector and many of the causes of higher hous ingcosts TOOK ISSUE The civic affairs committee also took issue with the hous ing committees recommen Barrie family to seek aid in fighting eviction notice By PETER LESNIAK Examiner Staff Reporter Barrie family which has been looking unsuccessfully for two weeks for an apart ment it can afford is going to the Simcoe County Legal Aid Society to fight an eviction notice Jim Howes his wife June and their threeyearold son Robert were told to leave their 15 Dunlop St apart ment witnin 30 days on May 31 The apartment for which they pay $130 rent month is owned by Paul Perri Since he got his notice to be out by the end of June Mr Howes has been looking for acCOmmodation he can afford on his takehome pay of about $140 every 15 days He is janitor at the Canada Manpower offices at night and is paid the minimum hourly wage of $265 he said He can afford to spend up to $160 month for rent but hasnt had any luck in finding an apartment forthat He is being evicted so the landlord can make renova tions to the apartment Mr Howessaid However under the On tario Landlord and Tenant Act landlord must give minimum of 120 days notice of eviction to do renovations an official of the Ontario rent review office in Barrie said Also the renovations must be extensive enough to re quire building permit before it is valid reason for eviction N0 PERMIT ISSUED As of this week no building permit has been issued Mr Howes has searched newspaper want ads and checked with local real estate agents without success Theres nothing he said Either they wont take kids or when go round to see get refused Ive tried everything Theres nothing that low All they want me to do is buy buy buy Mr Howes 36 has tried the Salvation Army The Red Cross and the city Program Instead the statement ap proved today calls on the city merely to encourage AHOP and the development of new rental developments stating that mandatory AHOP could interfere with other planning goals and that the housing committees recommenda tions on rental units Would do little to encourage the pro duction of new rental units Todays statement calls for the city to review approval procedures for subdivisions severance Consents minor variances site plans zoning bylaws and official plan amendments as well as plan nin and engineering stan dar and lot levies with view to avoiding ting to kidnap the 14yearold daughter of John Craig Eaton chairman of Eatons of Canada Ltd Police said the girl Signe was released Unharmed by the man who was confronted by two policemen as he at tempted to leave the house with her She ran up the stairs of her home where her father and his wife had been tied up by the intruder The man ordered con stables ShaWn Clarke and David Linney to drop their revolvers They refused and jumped to cover behind some bushes See photo on Page The man fled with the policemen chasing him number of shots were fired but the man eluded them person was apprehended about an hour later However police said he refused tell them his name Police said rifle and car believed used by the kidnap per have been found The two constables arrived on the scene CP The Royal Canadian Legion wants immediate action to provide Specialcare facilities or aging veterans but the most the federal government has offered is an assurance the problem is being studied As the service veterans association opened its golden anniversary convention Mon day several among the 2500 delegates rose to urge Legion action in improving and building more facilities One of the first
