Ministry not confined to church When Rev Ken Purdon leaves Burton Avenue United Church for new assignment in Willowdale his absence is likely to be noticed beyond the limits of his 350member congregation In 10 years in Barrie Mr Purdon has served as presi dent of the local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association vicepresident of the Childrens Aid Society chaplain to the Army Navy and Air Force Club and member of the Parents Without Partners advisory board He has also taken an active role in the Barrie and District Ministerial Association and helped establish local youth hostel during the days of itinerant youth in the late 608 Im an activist he says cant sit still have to be ran tingaround But Mr Purdon who will stay on in Barrie until late sum mer makes it clear that there is more than personal preferen ce behind his involvement in the socalled secular sphere of the community The faith has something to say to every area of life he says dont see division bet ween the sacred and secular my understanding of the cosmos is that its all sacred and its only made secular by mans abuse of it To withdraw the church from the everyday world and turn it into spiritual ghetto he says is to deny the Christian faith THERMOSTAT see the church as being the thermostat of the community rather than the thermometer he says We have to change the temperature of society rather than just register it The Burton Avenue mngrcgation he says exem plifies these principles The congregation includes three aldermen past and present political candidates and others active in community life There is close wedding between their civic life and their religious life he says its great bunch of people SATURDAY SERMON By RICHARD DUNSTAN Examiner Staff Reporter and we leave it with great deal of reluctance What has drawn him away fmm Barrie is Willowdales TriChurch single building which will house Anglican Presbyterian and United ministries and congrega tions The participating de nominations wil operate joint Sunday school joint womens group and similar ac tivities The attraction of the arrangement is twofold he Rev KEN PURDON saysthe ecumenical nature of the project and the freedom it will provide from outdated structures The multipurpose church building will not have sanc tuary for worship but instead plain blank room You dont have any of the old trappings he says CHURCH IS PEOPLE He will miss the traditional architecture of Burton Avenue United he says but church is people not architecture He says the IriChurch Inject provides the solution to problem he has observed in his owriAilandale section of Barrie where four denominations operate church buildings and congregations within block or two of one another None of us can afford it he says There is only room for one Protestant church here He says he is not necessaril an advocate of formal churcli union in the denominational sense but he believes that Christians are united by divine things and separated by man made things and should co operate as much as possible especially in view of skyrocketing church upkeep costs Weve done some things together in Aliandale he says but nothing like the ex tent that will be possible in the new setting While seeing in the Tri Oiurch the shape of future Christianity Mr Purdon says that some things will remain the same like the Christian belief in the nature of God and the demands He places onmankind But even these must be treached in such way that those who think love means lust or whose fathers are cruel and irresponsible can be made to understand the Christian meaning of the commandment to love or the concept of God the Father he says IRANSLATING Love still means what it means Bibiicaliy speaking but we have to translate it he says We have to do lot that kind of translation for people who have the wrong ideas Mr Purdon Toronto native who took his under graduate and theological training at Queens Universi ty in Kingston was ordained in 1960 and served at the Salvation is Gods free gift satisfying our greatest need By REV FRANK WUEST Emmanuel Baptist Church One of the exciting ex periences of life is to anticipate the arrival of someone you know has
