l2Ihe Barrie Examiner Saturday May 22 I976 COUNTY SPORTS Ivy will honor oldtime stars By BILL CURRAN When Ivy Leafs the 1976 Simcoe County baseball league schedule against Alliston Canucks at home tomor row night they are planning ial pregame ceremony which should make it particu arly noteworthy occasion for area fans Baseball oldtimers who starred on Ivy Barrie Thornton and Alliston teams of the past will be honored and mention of their names should bring back fond memories to older spectators The ceremony is billed to start at pm and the game itself at 30 Oldest of the group of ten invited to participate is Dr Bob Davis who was with Ivy winners of the county ball title away back in 1902 Now resident of Toronto Dr Davis is still active at 90 and looking forward to meeting old Ivy friends Herman Jennett who was stellar pitcher for good Ivy teams during the 205 and 305 and his brother Ellw00d who was his catcher are two other exlvy standouts Herman was noted for years in county ball circles for his sharp breaking curves which some opposing batsmen claimed were often four feet wide Ellwood still has splintered ï¬ngers from catching his brothers fast ball Onetime outfielder Lyall Jennett of Ivy and Vernon Jen nett of Thornton were two other fine performers in the field and at bat Vernon occasionally also appeared on the mound Gordon Henry who was known for his speed on the bases and Jack Scott were versatile players with past Thornton teams Barries John Dobson who layed first when Hap Emms was pitching back in the 205 was invited Dobson was with Collingwoods notable 1935 team which annexed Ontario rovincial intermediate honors along with other outstan ing Barrie teams In more recent years he managed the Barrie club for two seasons in getting the team back in the county circuit teammate of Dobsons on the crack Collingwood cham pionship squad Huck Caesar now of Alliston is another member of the group The retired bank manager was star outfielder and hitter who was one of four from the 1935 Coll ingwood team chosen for the Georgian League league all stars Huck also performed for Alliston teams in his baseball heyday Around Ivy Caesar is perhaps better known as coach of the notable Alliston juvenile team of 1963 which defeated Ivy for the county title with remarkable finish Ivy was leading the best four out of seven finals three games to nil and then went down four games in row Harold Browley who was with Ivy teams during the 205 and 305 Ken Banting during the 305 and Martin Geil of Tomton during the 305 are other onetime players who will be honored ELLIS AGAIN PLAYING MANAGER Veteran catcher George Ellis who was chosen the most valuable player on the team last year will again be playing manager of the Ivy Leafs The Leafs will have most of last years players including Tom Arnold at second Bob Burns at short and Monty Elliott at third George Ellis and Tom Arnold will be star ting their 13th season of play in the county league Last year the Borden teacher as Arnold is known received an award for the most sportsmanlike and effective lay In the all star game at Collingwood he performed awlessly in the ï¬eld and came through with two hits and two walks at the date It was not his fault the North lost to the South to lvy has one of the leagues best pitching staffs featuring veteran righthanders Don Shannon Don McMaster and Bob Doner and southpaw Jerry Falls Shannon McMaster and Doner usually alternate at first when not on the mound while Falls plays in the outer garden and is good fly hawk Outfielders also include veteran Allan Ellis Bill Patton Bob Elliott Malcolm Wilson and Keith Money former star slugger who played with lvys 1964 South Simcoe win ners Money has been trying comeback after missing several seasons Wilson is younger brother of former first base star Joe Wilson now with the Ontario Provincial Police at Lucan Vic Hayward who catches and plays third also has been out with the team Most members of the present players were with the 1972 Simcoe County champions and six were also with Ivys 1966 OBA intermediate winners Allan Ellis pitched and played in the outfield for that memorable Ivy team which defeated Wilkesport in the ï¬nals after losing the opener to The Leafs came back to win to and then take the deciding game at Fergus to George Ellis was the catcher Tom Arnold and Bob Burns were infielders Monty Elliott pitched and layed the in ï¬eld and Keith Money also was an outfie der with that standout Ivy outfit LEAGUE OPENS AT CREEMORE DIAMOND Creemore Braves and Midland Indians will have the honor of openin the 1976 Simcoe County baseball season at the Creemore iamond this Saturday evening providing the weather is favorable Coach Carl Gowan has high hopes that this will be Creemores year after coming close to winning county honors several times Last year the Braves finished the south section on top then beat out Ivy in playoffs ultimately lost to Barrie Red Sox in the semifinals The year previous ly Carls team reached the finals before bowing to the Orillia Majors After this evenings contest the Braves are scheduled to visit Colllingwood for the Cavemens grand home opener on at museums An Angus reader forwarded clipp ing about 25mile biccycle race from Orillia to Barrie which apparently stirre up great deal of excitement on an eventful June 22 1892 The Barrie Examiner reported chap named Dan Bashman raced his highwheeled vehicle over rough roads in what was termed the remarkable time of one hour and 45 minutes to win the marathon event He received the plaudits of crowd of several hundred and solid gold watch and chain Frank Stewart of Orillia who trailed by just seven seconds was given gold watch for another su rb effort The account said Stewart led good deal
