dispensable after harvest and few British far mers had any qualms about burning it Straw was riot worth much and the cost of transporting it was high But now farmers are becoming increasingly alert to the environmental hazards of burning straw these can be every bit as great as ef fluent oil and industrial pollution recent survey in Britain showed that little more than half of the straw crop had been used for feed or bedding on the farm little was sold to other farms but next to nothing plowed in Nearly 40 per cent was burned In fact it was estimated that about 35 million tons went up in smoke each year equivalent in nutritional ter ms of the ordinary unim proved raw material to well over one million tons of barley grain or of half million acres of cereals VALUE DOUBLED Britains largest manufac turer of animal feeds has just built revolutionary plant which can double the nutrient value of barley and wheat straw and turn it into useful ingredient for animal feeds at the rate of four tons an hour The planh has been built by BOCM Silcook at Kimbolton in Cambridgcshirc in ttc east of England and the process is so promising that the com pany plans to build two more elsewhere in Britain in time for this years cereal harvest In the past the feeding value of the material was limited because much of the nutriment was locked away in the cell walls Althoug straw makes useful bedding it is only ofnvalue if farmer has big enough livestock en terprise to make use of an output which can easily average two tons per acre of cereals The concept of feeding straw to livestock is almost as old as agriculture itself Even the principle practised at the Kimbolton plant of treating the straw with chemical to break down its fibrous cell walls goes back to the turn of the century Hotel iroduced bestseller in the fifties marks her 2lst bir thday this year But to the scores of children who annually visit the Plaza to view the fulllength Eloise portrait in tte lobby she nemains sixyearold enfant terrible Like Peter Pan she never grows up in small minds she is still tearing along the hotel corridors pouring water down the mail chute and giving strange orders raisin and seven spoons to room service Carrie Sheehan recently made her way to the Plaza to see the suite supposedly oc cupied by Eloise She had been brought up on the tales anf in her mind she had visualized every corner of the suite There was never an Eloise suit but the management quickly took care of that Carrie was whisked to an em pty suite and allowed to ex plore every corner The excited child was then taken to Palm Court the ele gant lobby luncheon and tea room where Eloise occupied small marble table in the midst of celebrities Eloise was poor little rich girl whose globetrotting mother checked her into the Plaza with hsr nanny and took off for distant lands lmpish Eloise soon had firm hand at the helm of the hotel When there wasnt anything else to fo she slid down the curving bannisters and leaned over the railing of the Terrace Room ogling guests at receptions Her day was busy one checking on everyone from the door man to the bell cap tains to the maitre ds the maids the switchboard operators the bus boys and waiters Princess Grace of Monaco oncs brought her children in to the Plaza lobby to see Eloises portrait It wasnt there Princess Grace lear ned it had disappeared few days earlier during frater nity dance Another portrait the famous Plaza child was permanently affixed to the lobby wall Mountains of mail ad dressed to Eloise arrived daily at the Plaza during her heyday were born in the major breeding ground along the Hudson Bay coast between Cape Henrietta Maria and the Manitoba border Another large section along the James Bay coastline al most as large as the surveyed area was not checked Natural resources predator specialist George Kolenosky who completed the count last month said Sow bears averaged two cubs litter Some had three cubs Our polar bears have one of the highest rates of reproduction for the species in the world He said the cubs have good chance of surviving to adulthood He said that when sows have three cubs one cub is tsually born small In the colder parts of their range like the Northwest Ter ritories the small ones tended to die from exposure But Ontarios milder climate gives them better chance The cubs are tough Although they emerge from their winter den weighing only 25 pounds almost im mediately they follow their mother on long arduous journey First they walk 100 miles to coast of Hudson Bay an then follow her across 160 miles of open water to the sealing grounds Mr Kolenmsky said the sows really protect their young He had even seen sows stand it on their hind legs and cha enge lowflying air craft JUVENILES SUFFER Its
