48 ma DAN MALONEY spent at good part of the annual Barrie Minor Hockey Association banquet Satur day pleasing autograph hungry players Maloney of the National Hockey League Detroit Red Wings is product of the Barrie minor system He was guest speaker for the an ta nual event which attracted some 700 players coaches officials and parents to the Barrie Armory Ex aminer Photo Barrie NHLer is hit at annual BMHA night Dan Maloney is nobody new to Barrie hockey fans He started attracting attention at an early age with his ex ploits on the ice Now at 25 Maloney is fullfledged member of that elite rank of professional hockeythe Na tional Hockey League Maloney is still attracting attention He was involved in major trade last summer that sent him and Terry Harper to the Detroit Red Wings with the Los Angeles Kings picking up the services of Marcel Dionne It didnt stop there In one game Maleneys name became commonplace in hockey households across the nation His name was on the tips of most sports colum nists fingers or spread in blaring headlines across ma jor dailies It was the kind of publicity which did him the Red Wings and hockey in general littel good In fact probably the kind of publicity he would best like left alone Maloney became national figure when he became the rolling stone in attorney general Roy McMurtrys campaign to stop violence in hockey It was Maloney who was in volved in an altercation last November with Leafs Brian Glennie Charges were laid against Maloney in connec tion with the incident The fouryear veteran of professional hockey told the gathering of players and parents that he was not at liberty to discuss it right now He was under instruction from his lawyer to keep quiet ontheissue Dan Maloney came back to Barrie Saturday as the special guest of the Barrie Minor Hockey Association BMHA The occasion was the BMHAs annual banquet with following dance at the Barrie Armory Maloney was hit with young hockey players His time was spent in giving out autographs to seemingly endless line of waving pro grams Maloney is product of the BMHA He played his entire minor hockey in Barrie before moving into junior hockey and eventually into the professional circuit He was there Saturday to share his story For Maloney it was the first time he had at tended banquet the size of the BMHAs annual event and he considered it great honor to come back His experiences along the trail of pro contract helped open few eyes as to the wor ries and woes of young man seeking to make the grade Maloney started as novice player and quickly rose through the ra nks He re counted the thrill of tourna ment play and the experience of first long road trip as youngster After his first year of ban tam he really took gam ble by trying out for the midgets He made the team think it was good move for me because got to play against players who were bet ter and bigger than me Maloney considered his venture into midget play as the real turning point as far as getting break in hockey Maloney said he never ex pected to be drafted but that one morning while was sleeping in as usual letter arrived from the Toronto Marlboros junior club in viting him to training camp was lucky enough to have good camp he told the gathering He was selected to play for the Marlie Junior team That was perhaps one of the toughest years ever spent in hockey The 15yearold rookie thought about packing it in many times He admitted to being homesick but was talked into stickingout the year by family and friends The next year was shocker for the more con fident Maloney He attended the Marlie training camp camp in which he thought he did pretty well They advised me to go back home and go back to school They didnt think could make it as junior player Maloney took the advice and went home although it upset and embarassed him The door to fortune had not closed When it looked as if he would be playing hockey in Quebec he received call from the owner of the London Knights asking him to join the junior club He did The first season got off to slow start but Maloney had good year the next campaign scoring 34 goals He was among some heady hockey talent that year in the likes of Darryl Sittler and Dan Bouchard The NHL June draft came and he was the first round pick of the Chicago Black Hawks It was one ofthebig gest thrills that ever hap pened to me He lasted seven days at the Black Hawks camp before joining the Dallas Black Hawks Chicagos farm team Maloney got his first taste of NHL play when he was called up after an exhibition game to play against the Leafs that same night game in which he scored goal It was back to the farm system after that game Three weeks later he was told to report to Chicago where he promptly was put on the samelinewith PitMartin and Gerry Pinder Stanley Cup was win away That was the year Chicago and Montreal Canadiens met for the Stanley Cup meeting which ended in favor ofthe Habs The series went the distan oe and it was the seventh game and the two goals by Henri Richard including the winner that Maloney remem hers Ill never forget that goal winner as long as live was standing to the right of the net and could see Rejean Houle coming down the right side of the rink there were just two defencemen back and saw Richard coming down the boards going hell bent for election Houle just fired rinkwide and Richard picked itup thought he was gomg so fast he was going to skate right through the end of the rink but he didnt He went deep into the corner and came right back out in front pulled Tony Esposito and threw it into the top left hand corner That was the closest Maloney has come to being on aStanley Cup winner The next season was to eventually find Maloney in Los Angeles After going back to Chicagos training camp things went pretty well in campMaloney was set to move in when he decided to check with Billy Reay first told him had place to stay the rent was fair and in good area should take it The answer was no and it was on to Dallas Maloney was later to consider the move one of the best things to happen to him with theisteady icetime which came his way The World Hockey Association WIIA was beginning to make serious tremors in the NHL with its large attractive proposals Maloney was wooed by the Los Angeles Sharks which drafted him He checked it out but decided to stick with Chicago It was more substantial offer to play in the WHA than in NHL pointed out Maloney But it was the NHL he wanted and with it came the chance to play alongside two of the alltime greats Stan Mikita and Cliff Corral Before the season ended he was traded for the first time to the Kings in Los Angeles for Ralph Backstrom At that time Chicago was making pretty good run at the Stanley Cup and they needed an older experienced centre who could score goals The Barrie native still con siders Kings coach Bob Pulford as probably the best coach hes ever had Maloney finished out the season picking up 17 points in 15 gimes The next season under Pulford was good one for both the Kings and Maloney That was the same year the NHL changed its playoff system Los Angeles chased the Candiens right to the end of their division before going out against Toronto in the quarter finals THE TRADE Then came THE TRADE It was kind of funny the way it happened outlined Maloney He received call from Kings official asking if he knew Marcel Dionne very well said didnt know him very well but played again st him and knew him to talk wtt Dionne had become free agent and Kings hinted they were interested in acquiring his services Maloney was asked to drop in to visit Dion ne in St Catharines to tell him how nice Los Angeles was No problem said Maloney He was told to hang on while check was made with the Kings owner Jack Kent Cooke No return call came and and as Maloney said he got an inkling of what was up coming CAR $7 DAY s1795 Friday to Monday Plus Mileage Featuring Chevrolet TIEDEN 341 BAYFIELD ST lAt found young players sneaking to the table to have the wingers signature scrawled in red ink across their souvenir programs After talk centering around his climb to NHL status Maloney opened the door
